Thats a long drive. BuUt it will be easier having your own car rather than hiring one down here.

thereinmadnesslies · 29/10/2011 22:20

There is the Legoland hotel opening in march 2012 - looks fun. Maybe you could do 2 days in the park staying one night in the Lego hotel, then move on somewhere else

Groovee · 29/10/2011 22:23

We went to Legoland in July 2009 just as the Scottish holidays started. We booked the holiday inn in slough and we drove to Alton Towers for 2 days, then on to Leicester then on to Legoland on the Tuesday where we had 2 days at Legoland and then 2 days in London. We drove home on the Saturday leaving at 9am and including stops got home at 4pm. Go before the English school holidays and it's not as busy as it will be a few weeks later.

duckdodgers · 29/10/2011 22:25

We live near Glasgow and have drove it (stopped off on the way back from driving to France), of course its a long drive but handy to have your own car.

Have a think about going immediately when the Scottish schools break up as English schools will still be in, might be slightly less busy then.

squeakyfreakytoy · 29/10/2011 22:27

Legoland is a one day visit. You need to fit it into a trip where you are doing other things too.

Windsor is a nice place, there are travelodges and holiday inns near by.

If you are driving down from Scotland though, there are many other places too that you could visit. Warwick Castle is brilliant, and kids love it.

You could stop off in Blackpool on the way back up.. its a bit tacky, but again, kids love it in the daytime.

Lake District is fabulous for scenery.

You could also do Alton Towers (plenty of vouchers to make all these trips into a much cheaper option).

frazzled74 · 29/10/2011 22:29

Travelodge Windsor very central, you can take a hopper bus to legoland, you need 2 full days ideally plus you will probably enjoy a little time spent in windsor so you probably need 3 nights at a hotel minimum, we went in summer hols and it was fine as long as you get there for 9 am and go to the busier rides first.Have you considered train?

leelo · 29/10/2011 22:32

thank u for all your help it can be very hard organising a trip when you don't know the area. the only other issue is doing it before or after the olympics. decisions, decisions.

Or there is Thorpe Park, which is next to Windsor... and much better than Chessington.

I really recommend the macddonald hotels - either savill Court (has spa..and pool..) or Windsor (opposite the castle and central to the railway station arcase - really lovely lots of shops and restaurants). You can use tesco vouchers to pay for your stay. Staff really friendly and they seems to be child friendly (I have 6 yr old boy)

ChazsZombieAttack · 29/10/2011 22:52

What dates are you thinking of?

Make sure you are not too close to the Olympics as the area around Heathrow will be a nightmare and the Olympic rowing is taking place at Eton Dorney which is just outside Windsor. I think the M4 is an Olympic route as well.

AnonyMaw · 29/10/2011 23:00

Try to choose a time of year when Scottish schools are on hols but English aren't, as it gets crowded in LL. E.g. early summer, before English summer hols. Last time I went to Legoland it was plagued by wasps, so I'm not sure if you can also factor wasp season into your plans?

foreverondiet · 29/10/2011 23:09

Personally I'd say drive, useful to have car there and you can do other things en route and while you are there eg cadbury world. depends where in scotland I guess, if north of glasgow/edinburgh maybe worth flying esp if only for a couple of days.

But only go if you can get there at start of July as if you go during english school holidays total nightmare end up spending whole day queuing. We live around an hour away and go most years (use tesco vouchers) we just went on 17th October, supposed to be off peak day (dc's school off but most schools at school) and still did enough queuing.

Go first week in July before english schools finish, and before olympics.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 30/10/2011 00:43

There are lots of good offers from nearby hotels - stay at the hotel, get in at very reduced price so look on the legoland website and research others too, as you can save a lot that way.

Or look at the very good deals available on this very site! I got in for half-price recently.

If this is your only holiday, definitely plan to do 2-3 days there, you will certainly be able to fill the time and perhaps also do Windsor Castle as well.

Why do you want to drive? It is a very long way from you, and you won't use a car much. It's very close to Heathrow and I think there are buses to it. Again, look on the website to investigate.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 30/10/2011 00:44

Oh and if you can budget for the Q-BOTs they really reduce queueing time.

slavetofilofax · 30/10/2011 01:14

Do you both drive so that you could share it?

Personally, I'd prefer to fly if there were no plans to spend a day and night at another attraction along the way. It does just come down to personal preference.

I wouldn't worry about the Olympics, go whenever suits as long as you stay away while it's actually on.

missingmumxox · 30/10/2011 01:25

don't bother, we went on a inset day in May so no school holidays and got on 4 rides! the whole day, we had sandwiches and ate them in the lines, one ride took the guy 20 minutes to load and unload for a 90 sec ride, trust me I had plenty of time to time it! not impressed, and it isn't lego it is a theme park without a theme, I imagined models all over the place, my 5 year old twins as we left, I asked if they wanted to go again, Ds2 said can you buy us lego and make it with us instead? as that is how we spend every sat it was a no brainer, I really felt ripped off,

carriedababi · 30/10/2011 01:30

If your going all that way get qbots. Hotels I reccomend Oakley court or mercure

Windsor

befuzzled · 30/10/2011 01:35

We live nearby and have merlin passes so go a few times a year. There is more to it than just the rides but you can miss it - there are at least 2 creative areas where you can build models, shows, the actual miniland bit (which is fab - lego models of different countries etc) and a small water park area with fountains, water cannons etc and 2 or 3 adventure playground type places, slides etc. I think for the distance you are coming you need to do 2 days at least. If doing 2 days it is possibly worth considering getting standard Merlin passes when they are on 20% off days, normally around the Easter and May bank holidays. You can generally get them for about £90 odd per person and then you can go twice and also to chessington or Thorpe Park as others have said if you have time, or even London Eye and London Aquarium in London. Plus 10% off in the shops. Chessingtone is good for younger children and has an aquarium and zoo.

I think drive too then you have the flexibility to go into London, Windsor, other theme parks etc - would cost a packet on public transport. Isn't near any thing relaly and you might want to drive to get food etc.

It is hellish when busy - I really wouldn't consider July/August when the English schools have broken up, or if you do, go mid week, not weekends. If you get a good day busy, but not rammed, it is a great day out, we love it. We never get Q bots as they are insanely expensive imo, but go less busy times instead, or try to. I went during the Royal Wedding and the last England World Cup game and it was great! Almost no queueing (none at all for a couple of hours during the football). Not sure you can replicate that but I wonder if actually during the Olympics might not be a bad idea if you are staying on site in the Hotel and don't have to worry about traffic - might be quiet during the opening ceremony or the 100m final!

whatdoiknowanyway · 30/10/2011 07:27

We used to do the journey in the opposite direction. DH drove, he had the day to himself, listened to the radio, took his time.
I flew with the kids, really enjoyed dawdling through the airport with 2 little girls and only a short flight so not a big deal to look after them both.
He met us at the airport and then we had a car for the rest of the holiday.
Worked for us.

leelo · 30/10/2011 19:56

i really appreciate all the advice. dh's job needs holidays to be decided in advance. so i need to think and choose all aspects now so i can make sure we all will be able to go together. i worked out that flights would cost about £260 and petrol much less but then its factoring in transport between venues and making it all as stress free as poss.i know theme parks are difficult and can make u feel angry queuing all day. but its time for a change. and legoland could be interesting

Get yor dc to write to Blue Peter shortly. Hopefully that will be in time to receive a badge and card. The children then get free entry to Legoland (at present).

Don't bother going after about the first, possibly second week in July. It's horrible. I like going when I feel lonely there!
