DP just came downstairs looking all proud of himself as he had dressed LO all by himself and chosen an outfit where the bottoms actually looked good with the top (note the sarcasm and shock; previous attempts have not been so successful!)

Was I being unreasonable to make him remove the top so that I could sew in an extra apostrophe? (And yes, this really did happen!)

PFB? Moi?

where I worked (education dept FGS) the sign on the back door said 'goods recieved' used to really annoy me.

MrsVoltar · 29/10/2011 14:37

My DS used to have an M&S top which said 'T is for Tractor' with a picture of a digger underneath Confused

ohbabybaby

Actually, the word 'hippo's' with an apostrophe is correct. The apostrophe is not only used for genetive or possessive purposes. It's also used where letters are missing from a word - for example: don't or haven't.

'Tom's' for 'tomatoes' on a greengrocer's market stall is correct. When we say 'congrats', strictly speaking, it should have an apostrophe after the 't'.

Zukie, I haven't picked up anyone personally. One daughter is dyslexic.
Big companies are a very different matter.

They should get it right. It's just annoying

It's like "7 items or less" in Tesco. Surely in a company with about 2 million employees they must have someone with a basic grasp of grammar??

PotteringAlong · 29/10/2011 15:03

Definitely not being unreasonable.

I refused to by a top from
Jojo mama bebe that said "im a pirate"

It would've annoyed me whenever my nephew wore it!

I once complained in sainsbury's because they had a sign talking about saving so many Tones of plastic.
They never removed it or got it updated.(and this was one of those proper signs that they get centrally made and have to display in every store in the country!)

nickelbabe · 29/10/2011 15:18

colken - the ' is only appropriate where the word isn't an accepted abbreviation - so Hippos is correct, not hippo's because we call a hippopotamus a hippo.
tom's, fair enough, but Toms would still be neater in this instance.
