Who is? Ds, fishing cost and pocket money

Ds (12) gets £10 a week pocket money. Most Saturdays he goes fishing with his grandad and occasionally he goes to a lake which costs £7, this is happening tomorrow.

DH thinks he should pay for it himself this time now he gets regular money, I think we should pay, or at least go halves.

What do you think? :)

Wow - £10 is far too much!!!! He should pay for it - what else does he need to buy, I assume you provide all his food and clothes....

Collision · 28/10/2011 18:19

£10 a week is a LOT of money!

what is he expected to pay for out of this?

I think he should pay for it himself as I doubt he has spent all of his money from the last couple of weeks unless-he-smokes!!!!

OldGreyWassailTest · 28/10/2011 18:21

If he 'occasionally' goes to a lake that costs £7 - then, out of his £10 a week (my God!), he should 'occasionally' save up for it.

FabbyChic · 28/10/2011 18:21

I think if you pay for other activities for your children to participate in then you should pay for his.

If you can afford £10 a week pocket money it is not too much.

squeakyfreakytoy · 28/10/2011 18:22

Why doenst Grandad pay for it? If I were taking my Granddaughter somewhere, I would expect to pay and happily do so.

Orchidskeepdying · 28/10/2011 18:22

You do realise you're giving hime £520 a year....

loopylou6 · 28/10/2011 18:23

It is a lot, but he earns it tbf. Yes of course we provide everything else, his money is just for him to use as he pleases.

He's fishing mad and past couple of weeks money has been spent in the fishing shop on strange looking things Hmm Grin

Good idea, he's crap with managing money tbh so this may help.

My 15 year old dd doesn't get 10 a week to spend as she pleases!7

loopylou6 · 28/10/2011 18:34

He has jobs to do for it tho, its not just given to him.

OP posts:
seeker · 28/10/2011 18:46

What sort of jobs?

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 28/10/2011 18:51

I can't work out why his Grandfather isn't paying!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/10/2011 18:54

Lou, didn't you know that on MN children get 50 pence a month pocket money, tops?

And that you can get 6 dinners from one chicken? [hgrin]

£10 a month is very generous I suppose - but it depends what he needs the money for.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/10/2011 18:55

A week I mean.

loopylou6 · 28/10/2011 18:57

Sorry missed the question, he normally would go halves with me but they're struggling at the mo, and since he's gettin his own money now...

His jobs are taking and picking dd to/from school ( it is on his way to his school practically anyway but huge job off my shoulders )

He does the dishes about 5 nights per week and walks the dog nightly.

Seems mean Granddad doesn't pay, unless he's short of money?

It depends if he has to pay for activities out of this money. But as you say he's not good with money, I agree to up it slightly to pay for fishing (50 a month?) and he has to make it last.

ballstoit · 28/10/2011 18:58

YABU. £10 a week is very generous and doesn't it kind of defeat the point of pocket money if you fund trips anyway?

CristinaaarghdellAaarghPizza · 28/10/2011 19:00

Why do you have to pay a 12 year old to be an actively contributing member of your family Confused

DS should pay, surely that's what pocket money is for. It's a good lesson in budgetting for him.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 28/10/2011 19:03

I do kind of agree with you Cris - although we have a similar set up with ds.

The difference is that he's not paid for doing the jobs, more that if he doesn't pull his weight (or doesn't do his homework, for example) then his allowance can be docked. DS is 11 and gets £20 a month. He tends to save it though for big things.

loopylou6 · 28/10/2011 19:03

Because I'm tryna teach him a lesson of life that if you want nice things you have to work for them.

OP posts:
LineRunnerWitchyMother · 28/10/2011 19:06

I give my kids a bigger allowance than this but they were meant to have to buy school lunches and some clothes out of it. It has, however, all gone completely tits up of late.

I would say that your DS should pay for his fishing out of his pocket money, but purely because that is the fantasy life of frugal appreciation by a DC that I want for myself. Smile

UniS · 28/10/2011 19:12

DS should pay his lake fee this weekend. its an occasional £7 rather than a regular activity cost.
