to put up a sign saying "No trick or treaters after 7pm"

ok i know somebody may have already done a halloween related post so i apologise in advance if i'm repeating.
basically last year we had loads of late night teenage trick or treaters (11pm ffs!) which kept waking our DD up which was a real pain in the arse. we didn't answer the 11pm ones and had taken the battery out of the doorbell but the sods still woke her up by banging on the door (not particularly hard or necessarily meant maliciously but still enough to wake her up). DP thinks this year we should put the above sign up over the weekend and monday but i think that might just make it worse and make us a bit of a target for the troublemakers. so AWBU to do this, or does anyone have any better advice to keep late evening/night trick or treaters away?
btw last year we gave teenagers packets of raisons so maybe they will decide its not worth it this year...

I might nip into Warrington and see what they've got on offer. Luckily for us, we don't have a door bell and I can ignore the feeble noise the letter box makes. I am assuming that the locals won't do TorTing the way they do in films from the USA?

GnomeDePlume · 28/10/2011 12:52

We dont live in Cambridge we just use that one as it uses least printer ink!

There boys trick or treating on the train on the way home last night. They weren't that old probably no more than about 10 and were going up and down the carriage with masks on asking for money.
I reported them when I got off the train, but don't know if anything was done about it.

we put a note up one year saying 'No Trick or treaters please' as one of the DCs was unwell, we also turned the porch light and hall way light out so the house, from the outside, was quite dark. We had no callers.

girlywhirly · 28/10/2011 13:02

Our doorbell has a loud electronic chime, and whenever someone rings it the cat leaps up in panic and runs to hide/ or out of the patio door if open. So If we are likely to have multiple rings, I'm unplugging it!

" or before 7 p.m. either"

I can't stand this growing craze. I'm autistic plus a survivor of domestic violence, still (18 years later) suffering from PTSD. I spend halloween hiding in terror in my house, in the dark, afraid to even put my tv on as a stream of strangers with their identities hidden hammer on my door. :(

MrBloomsNursery · 28/10/2011 16:31

We only had ONE trick or treater last year. The year before that, NOTHING. Our road has alot of old people with dogs...:(

LineRunnerWitchyMother · 28/10/2011 16:34

Last year we ran out of sweets by 7pm.

My daughter put a sign up - "SORRY we have run out of sweets!"

Not a peep after that went on the door ...

ouryve · 28/10/2011 16:35

We normally get a stream of older kids, without their parents, chancing their luck. We don't bother answering the door and I've persuaded DH to stop buying sweets for them, since the year when every single kid who came had the same mask on. The years we've not answered the door to the first one, it's pretty much been the last, too.

Much preferred the old days when kids would hang round on street corners muttering "Penny for Halloween" and carry on the week after with a stuffed old Presto bag and some old clothes muttering "Penny for the guy." Was a lot less intrusive.

GnomeDePlume · 28/10/2011 18:41

Put up a polite sign and you wont be bothered IME.

Your definatly all braver than me putting any type of sign up!! We'd be targeted for sure where we live doing that!! Good job we like the trick or treaters in our house!

When we run out sweets or it's getting late (usually 9ish), we tend to turn all the lights/ tv off downstairs and just watch abit of tele in the bedroom instead... No one ever knocks as they think we're in bed! It works every year!

BTW i can't believe some of you get trick or treaters before actual Halloween eve! They'd get a short sharp 'jog on' from me, how cheeky!

TrinaLuciusMalfoy · 28/10/2011 19:06

My local police do a poster downloadable from their website saying 'no trick or treat, please enjoy your night without disturbing ours'. This will be the third year we've used it and it hasn't failed us yet. We had an egging four years ago and I swore no more tricks or treats.

My favourite Halloween Humbug story though came from a friend: she was in the pub around 20th October and some kids were wandering around, dressed up, with a pumpkin bucket calling trick or treat. My friend took one look at them and said 'Merry Christmas'. 'But it's not Christmas!' they cried. 'It's not fucking Hallowe'en either' she replied...

WitchesAreComing · 28/10/2011 19:36

Grin at your mate, Trina. I'm going to answer the door saying that. If only something similar could be done for the total and utter wankers firework enthusiasts who started last Sunday [hangry]

thenightsky · 28/10/2011 19:50

It's not till Monday is it? They won't be out over the weekend as 31st is not till Monday. Or is the way it falls going to mean we will get it Saturday and again Monday?
