Boots Weighing machines

Are they just a pile of shite or am I kidding myself?
Am 5ft 2 and weigh 58.9 kg.
HOW THE FUCK CAN I HAVE A BODY FAT PERCENTAGE OF 42.7%?

BMI is 23.6 UP from 22.9 two months ago (Fat % was 35.3 then) . This is after I have been on a lower fat diet for a fortnight.

FFS I am not moaning about my weight, but according to this sodding machine I'm obese. Confused
Someone clear this up for me please. I have no patience with diets, I'm just a little (!) concerned by this...

That must be a mistake Madame. Did you use the machine in the store? I'd ask a staff member about that and get a refund. You are not anywhere near obese at that weight

KatAndKit · 27/10/2011 17:59

I bet this machine is next to where they sell diet products!
Your weight and BMI are fine, it is not saying you are obese.
The body fat percentage is what it is supposed to measure when you are holding the handles. I guess these can be very inaccurate. Or perhaps you haven't got enough muscle and could do with more exercise? I don't know, but you are definitely normal weight.

StaceymAloneForver · 27/10/2011 18:02

thats a completely normal weight, my goal weight is 60kg currently im 72kg, but i'm a size 10/12 so don't bother too much about my actual weight. i doubt their body fat measuring thingumy is up to much tbh!

your bmi is within normal range :)

SacreLao · 27/10/2011 18:03

I'd assume that was a mistake as well, never used a Boots one specifically but have found the machines to be pretty good usually.

There is a few BMI / Body fat calculators online, not sure how acurate they are but may be worth comparing?

fatlazymummy · 27/10/2011 18:05

I use one of these once a month or so. Firstly, make sure you stand as upright as possible so it accurately measues your height.
Secondly, I would also check your BMI and measure your waist. If all 3 say roughly the same thing then you can assume they are reasonably accurate [assuming you are not an athlete or a bodybuilder]. So if your BMI tells you that you are a certain amount overweight then you can assume that is excess fat, not muscle/water.
Of course all these things are a guideline. It may possible to get your BF measured at a gym using the caliper method, or you can even pay for the water test at some gyms.

The one in the Victoria Cente (Nottingham) keeps telling me I'm nearly 11 stone and 5 foot 4. I'm 5 foot 2 and a size 10 Hmm They are all useless.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 27/10/2011 18:07

I had to use that machine when 1 was 22 weeks pregnant. Lovely. Think I was nearly 50% fat. I mean i know I need to lose a stone or 2 but to be told I am nearly half fat not entirely sure it is accurate.
Still have no clue why it was necessary to take the measurement when pg.

Thanks all - I'm not unhappy with my weight just the way it's distributed but having a high fat content just makes me think I'm headed for a fecking heart attack and it gave me a shock.

Sacrelao I will check those out, thank you.
