I am an avid reader, though I don't get much opportunity these days, just a page or two while I'm falling asleep. My real love is reading non-fiction: autobiographies, history, science, nature, etc. Often when I'm reading I'm amazed by something I read: how matter and energy are the same thing, the politics of tea growing, how our bodies work, that kind of thing.

Sometimes I really want to share these with DW. But after a couple seconds she'll roll her eyes and say something like "you lost me at hello". Then she goes back to her own book about how Marilyn wants to get together with Dave, but he's gorn orf with Sarah. (I've tried reading her books and to be honest I'd prefer to eat them.)

AIBU to wish she was equally excited and interested about these things?

DP tries to show me pages on reddit and I try to show him pages on MN. We almost always hate them Grin

Weirdly we tend to like the same comedy things but laugh in different places.

My boyfriend likes sci-fi and geeky books about maths and stuff like Stephen King.
I like a nice bit of historical fiction.

It hasn't caused us any trouble, we have plenty of other things to talk about.

It would certainly annoy me if someone kept interrupting my reading to lecture me about something they considered more 'worthy' Hmm.

I don't tend to read 'chick-lit' but I do like sci-fi and fantasy, and some historical fiction, anything with a good adventure!. I don't think that's inferior to pop-science books (which are generally quite dumbed-down in my experience anyway) or someone's autobiography. It's just a matter of different preferences.

The only time DH and I discuss a book we have read is when there is a common interest.

I think if he interrupted my reading to discuss with me something I have no interest in I would take the terry prachett book I was educating myself with, shove it in his morpork and make him go Oook. Smile

Just put the books down and get busy in other ways..
