Warning don't use Century21 Shop

Not really AIBU, but with Christmas coming up, people might be looking for dvds. Don't use this online shop, they take your money, you get an email that your dvds have been shipped, they never arrive and they don't respond to emails.

If by any chance you do have good experiences with them or their contact phone number please let me know.

The Century 21? What's their URL. The real Century 21 is a large chain of dept stores in the US Confused

Andrewofgg · 25/10/2011 22:02

If it's the chain whomoved means DW and I love 'em but we've never used them for mail order.

Whatmeworry · 25/10/2011 22:13

US Century21 is great.

dikkertjedap · 26/10/2011 21:20

It is this one I was fooled by the fact that they present themselves as verified by Paypal etc. They are definitely bogus, I should have had my dvds long time ago now and have sent numerous emails, no replies whatsoever. Sad

Technically they are passing off if they are pretending to be another business and you should be able to get a refund from Paypal regardless. I would strongly recommend you change your Paypal password and check all transactions on your account.

Acekicker · 26/10/2011 22:52

Sorry you got scammed.

Some tips when online shopping - check the 'verified by' buttons at the bottom of the screen - the ones on that website don't go anywhere ie they've just copied the pictures. Genuine ones should click through to the verifying body where the site is listed (just clicking through isn't enough, anyone can add a link to a website). Also the contact email is hotmail and there are blank pages for about us etc. Basically the site screams 'dodgy as hell'.

If you use the same email address/password for that site as you do any others then you need to change them immediately (in addition to the good advice to change Paypal password and keep an eye on transactions).

whomovedmychocolate · 26/10/2011 22:55

Interesting - now just for future info - if you see on a website the logos at the bottom which say they are partnered with or verified by Paypal or another payment provider, these should be clickable links which will take you to more info on the verification, in this case they are just images. Hmm

And if you click on the 'about us' page it's blank.

Doh!

Make a claim www.paypal.com/helpcenter/main.jsp;jsessionid=BvpyTyBbFcxdGJNcKnbCGJJVK5VcfBrpVtQR2ftQq27q5SdqHsB0!1346055050?versionpath=HELPWEB-640-20110207-1&ft=homeTab&_dyncharset=UTF-8&cmd=_help&solutionId=1209610&t=solutionTab&ps=&countrycode=GB&locale=en_GB&sidetopic=55400022 and do not delay because you can not claim if you don't do so within a set period (think it's 28 days from memory).

PurpleCrazyHorse · 26/10/2011 22:57

My advice to anyone shopping online with a company they haven't shopped with before is to look for an office address and information about the company.

The red flags for this website are that there's no office address and they only provide a hotmail e-mail address for contacting them. I always purchase using my credit card the first time I buy anything from an 'unknown' website so I'm covered if the items don't arrive.

FabbyChic · 26/10/2011 23:00

You have 45 days to make a claim via PayPal for non receipt of items, however you have to have paid via the stores checkout which would then mean signing into your PayPal account.

Sign into PayPal and file a non receipt claim via the resolution centre, escalate immediately.

dikkertjedap · 26/10/2011 23:36

yes, I have filed a complaint with Paypal. The odd thing is the transaction doesn't show up on my paypal account but I did get the paypal confirmation email. Anyway, I have forwarded the confirmation email to Paypal so hopefully they can sort it out. Is there anything I can do to have this website closed down so other people don't end up in the same situation? Should I report it somewhere? Thanks for all advice.

musicposy · 26/10/2011 23:47

As others have said, always, always look for a proper street address if you don't know the company, plus a genuine phone number. If they only have an email contact form, I won't buy from them.

Most companies will tell you about themselves, what town they're in, who they are etc etc. This information will soon give you a flavour of whether they are real or not. I always steer away from bad grammar in these sections too - often fake websites from the far east, as this is, pretend they are UK sites. Phrases that sound stilted and not how an English person would speak can help alert you to this.

There's so little information on this website about the actual company - it just screams fake to me. You can email them until you're blue in the face and you aren't going to get an answer.

Now you've seen a fake one, you'll know what to look for in future. In the meantime, contact paypal immediately and get your money back.

musicposy · 26/10/2011 23:51

Was the confirmation email definitely from paypal? I'd be getting your bank/ card details changed as who knows what info the scammers have on you. It's pretty easy to set up a site that looks just like paypal too, and they'll have all your card details.
I do hope this works out for you. But I'd be contacting my bank/ card issuer asap.

dikkertjedap · 26/10/2011 23:52

Thanks everybody. But does anyone know where I can report this company? Is there anything I can do to get this website closed down?

OP posts:
musicposy · 27/10/2011 00:02

You can try these people or you can phone Trading Standards, but the trouble is you're dealing with a big global problem here from a little country far removed from the source. You could also email GoDaddy as it's registered through them.

dikkertjedap · 27/10/2011 00:07

Thanks, I will contact the people in musicposy message and my bank tomorrow.

I personally would contact the real Century21. They probably have no idea that someone is cyber squatting on a variant of their name and using it for fraud. Also blog it, posting it here etc is an excellent way of getting it to show up in Google so others aren't caught out.

If it did not turn up in your paypal account chances are the payment did not go through paypal. I would contact your bank and tell them to change all numbers AND put a watch on the account - also check your credit record regularly for the next year (go to Moneysavingexpert.com to find out how to do this if you don't know). Sounds like they are a harvesting site. They collect customer details including credit card numbers, and then sell them on to others.

If you used that password for anything else change it. As a routine check run a virus scan and change your email password - AFTER you've checked for trojans and virii on your computer.

My sympathies. Unfortunately it's very easy to get caught out. DH was similarly caught out and it took him nine months to notice because it took that long for his info to be sold on an fraudulent transax to show up on his card.

dikkertjedap · 27/10/2011 11:22

Thanks again. Paypal has been very helpful, they will give a complete refund. They do have a record of the transaction but say that it was in a guest account, no ideal why that is the case but they are investigating. Their fraud team is also going to look into this business, so hopefully they have the muscle to close it.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 27/10/2011 19:31

It's great that they will refund you and investigate it. :)

lola1234 · 14/11/2011 11:43

Hi

I also bought DVD's from Century21shop.co.uk. I was lulled into a false sense of security by being able to pay by paypal. I received the DVD's and they were fake. I contacted them twice telling them I was unhappy with the DVD's and wanted a refund. I had no reply, so I opened a dispute with Paypal. I was told by Paypal to send the dvd's back to them and I would receive a refund. I sent them back and have the proof of posting but because I didn't use tracked, Paypal closed the dispute as they cannot confirm Century21shop received the DVD's as they are not replying. Please steer clear of this website.
