I've just watched the ten o'clock news.

At the end of the sports section, almost as an afterthought, there was finally a mention of the death of one of the riders.

It is heartbreaking, a tragedy, there are many words that could be used about it - I know that motor racing is inherently dangerous, and that risk and danger are a huge part of why it is exciting and why people watch and take part.
But really? doesn't it deserve a bit more of a mention?

why shocked - Moto GP isn;t a massive sport in this country - it wont get the same coverage as say a footballer droping dead - lots of people die playing sport - they don;t get mentioned either

squeakyfreakytoy · 23/10/2011 22:30

Moto GP is not a massively popular sport with household names, in comparison to Formula 1. I watched it, and that accident was horrific to see, even by the standards of crashes in any sort of high speed sport.

Very very tragic :(

DogsBeastFiend · 23/10/2011 22:30

I wasn't aware of this but if it's received little coverage than you're right... although it's fair to say that the rider's family and friends could do without it being repeatedly mentioned.

May he rest in reace, what a tragedy.

wineoclocktimeyet · 23/10/2011 22:31

I saw the 9 o'clock news on BBC 24 and I thought it was dealt with very sensitively.

RIP Marco Simoncelli.

squeakyfreakytoy · 23/10/2011 22:32

Probably a sign of the modern times, but it has been a trending topic on Twitter since it happened, so in some respects it has made headlines.

Happymm · 23/10/2011 22:34

Also headlines Daily Mail on line, though am embarrassed that I know that :o

Kayano · 23/10/2011 22:34

It was very sad. I only found out on the sky news app. I have been out all day so can't comment
On the reporting Sad

cantspel · 23/10/2011 22:35

It is the lead story on the daily mail web site but then no one on here admits to reading th DM so maybe not a good example. Where as 1000 dead in the turkey earthquake is half way down the page.

What is more newsworthy? one man dead do a dangerous sport or a 1000 dead going about their daily lives.

pinktransit · 23/10/2011 22:37

it's not popular on the same scale as F1, but it's mainstream enough to be screened on BBC1 throughout the season.

American Indycar racing isn't a massive sport in this country either, but there was huge coverage over a recent fatality. I am shocked, surprised, and upset that there was very little coverage over a similar incident.

OP posts:
squeakyfreakytoy · 23/10/2011 22:40

The Indycar driver was british though, and had raced here too alongside our F1 drivers.

wigglesrock · 23/10/2011 22:46

I'm sure there's much more coverage in Italy. I actually thought the coverage on BBC News 24 was really sensitively handled and very moving.

flatbellyfella · 23/10/2011 22:52

I can assure you that Marco had tens of thousands of fans in the UK ,you only had to go to Silverstone to see how many fans were wearing his race team shirts with Simonchelli on them. We will sadly miss him.RIP.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 24/10/2011 08:08

YABU... I have no interest in motorsport and never follow it and yet, after a day of catching various news reports on radio, TV and online, I am now aware of this tragedy involving someone who previously I had honestly never heard of. If it's permeated through to me, it has had adequate coverage.

Whatmeworry · 24/10/2011 08:15

It was on the news, along with a bunch of other huge stories.

Kayzr · 24/10/2011 08:18

I thought it was handled very well on the news.

I loved Marco Simoncelli, really enjoyed going to watch the Moto GP here and never miss a race.

RIP

Pinktransit and Squeakyfreakytoy

Just because you don't see a sport on television doesn't mean that it is not popular and has little following. There are many sports in this country that are not covered on television. We also have many World Champions in less-publicised sports but they are not mentioned on television or radio unless by chance regarding something else.

squeakyfreakytoy · 24/10/2011 09:31

I am well aware of that, but moto gp is not as mainstream as other sports that are televised.

HeadlessLamAAARRRGHHHH · 24/10/2011 10:34

IMO the BBC should've had this as their top sports news item. The thing they got spot on was not showing the whole crash, which is what Aljazeera did. I think we should be spared the sight of his helmet rolling across the track.
MotoGP may not be seen as a "mainstream" sport, but it is amongst the most popular sports, and rightly so. Yesterday the world of motorsport lost a superstar, a young man tipped by many as a future world champion in the MotoGP class. He was a double world champion in the 250cc class.
Should a similar incident happen to kill a rising football star it would be the lead item, and not just in the sports news.
Sic was extremely popular amongst us MotoGP fans for his racing style. He will certainly be missed.

A touching tribute.
