to be fuming that after we had all eaten our beef stew lunch MiL announced she's made it on Thursday morning.

Thanks MiL, what I really need tonight is a bout of food poisoning to hit all of us together.

How rude. I would never serve guests meat that I prepared four days previously.

I brought beef from Tesco on Tuesday (probably been packaged for a few days by then) made beef stew on Friday, we did it eat re-heated yesterday and I just had the remainders with some tiger bread, we are all still alive and kicking, full and satisfied, it was bloody lovely (maybe the bottle and a half of Merlot I put in it killed any germs though!)

Katisha · 23/10/2011 18:45

No wonder so much food gets wasted in this country if people are this precious about sell by dates.
We have fridges. We know to reheat thoroughly.

We regularly eat leftovers that are a week old.

TheBestWitch · 23/10/2011 18:47

I waste very little food because only buy dairy/meat products that I know will be used by the date. If it's a best before I will use my own judgement but I wouldn't risk an egg or anything.

Choufleur · 23/10/2011 18:50

We take frozen bacon and sausages camping too. They stay frozen for quite a while in a cool box with ice blocks. Nowt wrong with that.

Northernlurker · 23/10/2011 18:50

I agree with everyone else Grin

Choufleur · 23/10/2011 18:51

You can tell if an egg is ok by putting it in water. If it sinks it's fine. If it floats to the top it's probably not that great.

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 23/10/2011 18:51

SHJ assuming they're still alive, I'll guess it's done them no harm.

I bought a leg of pata negra about 3 weeks ago before leaving Spain. Still going, still fine and I'm not dead or suffering... I never refridgerated them (nor do they in Spanish shops/restaurants) out there. They generally last me 3 months unless DD1 gets to it, in which case it's about 3 days. So I hide it. Because it's mine.

TheBestWitch · 23/10/2011 18:53

Oh right. Might try that with eggs. I wouldn't risk meat though. DH probably would but I definitely wouldn't serve it to the kids. Leftovers always get eaten the day after in this house and reheated til they're piping.

SpringHeeledJack · 23/10/2011 19:02

Choufleur- for four days? In August??

Rock you're talking nice dry cured stuff here, no?

I'm talking flaggy wet Asda bacon

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 23/10/2011 19:04

Eeeek! I wouldn't like that either OP. Not idea what the actual rules are but I tend to not eat anything if it's been cooked and left in the fridge for more then a day. The idea just turns my stomach and having had food poisoning once I am very careful.

thousandDenier · 23/10/2011 19:04

OK BOF, I'll take on the MN Dodgy Bourguignon challenge.

If you don't hear back from me by this time next week it's because I'll have namechanged again and forgotten about this thread expired from Bad Beef.

SHJ - yep indeed. Tis the bollocks. So to speak.

SpringHeeledJack · 23/10/2011 19:08

yum! bring it to the meet up, Rock

we can all gnaw at it in the cab back to saarf London

ThePathanKhansWitch · 23/10/2011 19:09

I went for a curry once and the waiter said do you want white chicken or black chicken Confused, i said can you just call me a cab please Grin.True.

Choufleur · 23/10/2011 19:10

We did it for 3 days in August SpringheeledJack. They were still a bit frozen on the morning of the second day and some kept cold for the rest of the 2nd day and some for 3rd morning. We do re-freeze the ice blocks though to keep the box cold.

We're still alive and well so can't be that bad!

SpringHeeledJack · 23/10/2011 19:15

3 days is asseptable Chouf. Esp with refrozen ice blocks.

4 days, my friends, when the blocks melted on the first day, and everything's hanging about in small murky puddle, is NOT

Olivetti · 23/10/2011 19:18

What are the rules on reheating? (Mine was the "I can't cook" thread a while ago Grin)

Is it:

Cook
Refrigerate
Reheat to piping hot

Why are some people saying it wouldn't matter if it was lukewarm? I'm really confused now. Grin

colken · 23/10/2011 19:22

MrBloomNursery

You know how old MiL is then? Some MiLs are about 43. Is that old age?

I have poeple coming for lunch next week. Using the advice here, I will cook the beef the day before. Thank you everyone.

handsomeharry · 23/10/2011 19:23

YANBU OP. That would have had me heaving.

TheOriginalFAB · 23/10/2011 19:23

My MIL cooks a joint in the microwave/combi oven, leaves it out all night and morning and then feeds us it. DH is frequently ill after lunch there. Kids aren't though, thankfully.

ScarahStratton · 23/10/2011 19:26

I am 44. I am young. Young I tell you.

AAAvegetable · 23/10/2011 19:29

You people better all be right... DD2 (2) is refusing to go to sleep because her tummy hurts. Please let this be an unfortunate coincidence.
