to ask a stranger if I can take a photo of her because I want her hairstyle??

I am growing my hair and have a picture in my head of what I want it to look like but am struggling to find a photo that matches that to take to my hairdresser.

Was in the gym yesterday and the woman sat next to me doing her hair had the exact hairstyle I want...I should have asked her but it would have made me look very weird right?

God that'd creep me right out

valiumredhead · 23/10/2011 13:02

Nooooooooo, creepy creepy! Asking her where she gets her hair done is ok though imo.

BarkisIsWillin · 23/10/2011 13:03

If you got into conversation with her maybe you could ask her what hairdresser she goes to?

LaLaLaLayla · 23/10/2011 13:03

I wanted to do this in a restaurant a few weeks ago. There was a lady with exactly the hair colour I wanted. I told my DH I was going to ask her if I could take a picture and he was like, "Don't you bloody dare!!!".

It hadn't occurred to me she would have thought it odd.

tooearlymustdache · 23/10/2011 13:03

def start a conversation about hair and where she gets it done

she MIGHT be ok with you taking a picture, but not without getting you know you 1st

IndigoSunshine · 23/10/2011 13:04

No, I expect she would be flattered and find it amusing, I would if someone approached me for that reason! Or if she didn't like it, I'm sure she wouldn't have shouted and swore at you.

worraliberty · 23/10/2011 13:05

Not only that but it's going to be a bit embarrassing if the hairdresser stuffs it up and your style looks nothing like hers the next time you see her Lol

CointreauVersial · 23/10/2011 13:08

Oh I'd do it!

I'm always going up to people and asking where they bought a particular item of clothing if I really like it and have been looking for something similar; people are usually flattered.

I'd start a conversation with her first, though, to guage her reaction, rather than just leap in waving a camera like a crazed papparazzo.

ceebeegeebies · 23/10/2011 13:10

I knew it would have been creepy and there is no way I would have done it - but I was sat there wishing I could Grin

Will have to try and describe it to the hairdresser instead!!

Fatshionista · 23/10/2011 13:12

I'd find it flattering but a little odd if I'd not spoken to you before.

Strike up a conversation and steer it towards hair in general, then hers abd gauge her reaction. If she seems fine, go for it. Is it the end of the world if she says no?

worraliberty · 23/10/2011 13:13

My hairdresser gave me a great idea years ago

She said because most of the hairstyles in the hairdressing magazines aren't really 'normal' or practical....look through the pages of home shopping catalogues.

Most of the models have 'normal' hairstyles so you can cut out the pic and bring it along as soon as you find one you like.

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 23/10/2011 13:13

i wouldn't mind at all if someone asked me for that reason.

cookielove · 23/10/2011 13:14

I think you could have asked, or just done it on the sly Wink

MrsCog · 23/10/2011 13:14

I don't think it would BU - I'd be really flattered, as long as you struck up conversation first - rather than just firing up the camera!

dawntigga · 23/10/2011 13:15

I ask people all the time if I can take their picture for my research books for college. Some say no but you accept it with good grace and thank them for their time.

I also give them my card if I intend to pop them on my blog and they give me permission.

I think go in gently. Praise the hair Grin. Ask where she got it done. Say 'what did you ask for? Because I never know the terms. Basically, I need to go in with a picture of your hair, haha' and see what happens. If she backs away slowly - don't ask. If she is flattered, ask if you could take the picture.

ceebeegeebies · 23/10/2011 13:18

Sue I like your tactics - I will probably never see her again anyway! I am sure she thought I was weird anyway as I kept sneaking glances at her whilst she was straightening her hair etc Blush

Thanks for the tip about the catalogue - will dig my Very catalogue out and have a look.

TheMonster · 23/10/2011 13:19

I'm glad you didn't ask.

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 23/10/2011 13:21

You might, if you go to the same gym. Stalk her gently too then Grin

squeakyfreakytoy · 23/10/2011 13:31

I would ask. If someone asked me (highly unlikely with the windswept hedge dragged look that I am currently sporting), I would be happy to let them take a photo...

GiveMeStrength2day · 23/10/2011 13:33

I've been tempted many a time to ask a complete stranger if I could take a photo as I like their hair. I've never done it though. I think I'd be flattered if someone asked me. That said, I can't imagine anyone liking my hair (in its current state) and also I can't abide having my photo taken (perhaps if they had a mask to hand!).

However, I was presented with a golden opportunity recently. I'd taken DD to an activity centre and there was another mum there whose hair I really liked soooooo under the guise of taking photos of DD I "accidentally" got a few of this other mum. Was that really wrong? I mean, DD was still in the photo so I wasn't completely weird Grin

kitya · 23/10/2011 13:37

I wouldn't like it if someone asked me that. I would happily point them in the direction of my hair dresser though. I know loads of people that would loathe anyone copying their hairstyle so, I'm glad you never asked.

messybedhead · 23/10/2011 14:03

A lady once came up to me and asked me what dye I had used to colour my hair because it is exactly what she is looking for.

I was flattered and admired her confidence because I always see things I like on other people but don't dare ask.

I couldn't actually remember what I had used and I felt terribly guilty that I couldn't help her.

I say you should definitely ask!

comedycentral · 23/10/2011 14:08

If someone asked me I wouldn't mind.

Becks4Saints · 23/10/2011 14:12

I was paying for some clothes once and the lady behind me asked if she could take a photo of the back of my hair as it was styled exactly as she wanted it. It didn't creep me out at all, in fact gave me a real feel good factor that I had a hair style that someone thought was good enought to want to take a photo of Smile
