YANBU they are. I work in childcare and the male carers are great. They can offer different ideas and perspectives as well as caring for any child in the same way a woman does.

pigletmania · 22/10/2011 10:02

YANBU what narrow minded individuals. So all men are paedophiles, how sad! How would they feel if their dh/dp were treated this way! I think its good idea to have male nursery workers/Primary school teachers, some kids especially boys need a male influence as they may not have male role models at home, or may react better to males. I think my dd 4.5 would be better with a male Foundation teacher, I wish there was some in her school, sadly not all females in her Infant school.

My DS had a male carer in his nursery, and I thought it very progressive, not to mention the fact that he seemed lovely! DS is very slow to trust outsiders yet seemed very comfortable with him.

It would have been a real shame for him (the carer) not to have had the job just because someone was (or even a whole lot of someones were) wrong. Do we say that women can't work in highly paid finance because... er... why, exactly? Because there aren't many women in finance?

YANBU I would have LOVED a male carer at DS's nursery. One of the things that I like best about the after school club we use now is that there are tons of male carers - it is probably 50/50 male female which I think is great.

At DS school there are several male primary teachers (two of whom recently celebrated their civil partnership to each other) and I am very keen for him to have a male teacher. I send him to extra activities such as foot ball and athletics at school partly because those are taught by males.

Perhaps I am biased as a single parent as I am keen for DS to have positive male role models but I think it is very sad that parents would be any thing other than delighted to find a male member of staff caring for their child!

What horrible bigoted morons.

DS's nursery has 2 male carers in the baby and toddler rooms. They are brilliant. DS loves the guy in his room, he's always going to him for play and cuddles. When I was there with him when we were settling him in I was really impressed with the way they interact with the little ones.
DS really loves (and needs) Daddy time at home, I'm glad he has male role models (and carers and playmates) at nursery too, especially when DH is working nights and isn't around too much.

fizzwhirl · 22/10/2011 10:41

OP - please stick up for him!

Make sure you explicitly tell the nursery you support his appointment - they're probably feeling a bit under attack about it.

And when other parents make comments, tell them that you don't have an issue with it and that you think their attitude is wrong. We create the world we live in.

We had a fab male worker at the babybells nursery, everyone loved him and for a lot of the kids he was their only male role. He did a lot of work in his own time getting the dads involved, they even had a band called 'dadzone'

Fun times, he was always up to something he was Grin

Andrewofgg · 22/10/2011 11:03

Indeed. And there are women in Parliament. Not right . . . wish we had an emoticon for they-are-pig-ignorant.

TheQueenOfDeDead · 22/10/2011 11:06

duckdodgers don't let it put your DH off. My Bil is a childminder and is an enormous sucess. He is actively sought out by families that appreciate an additional male role model for their children.

There are far more people who appreciate the benefits of male carers than narrow minded bigots and it may just be that your DH needs to meet them Smile
