AIBU?

To have to let them in?

I move house soon, its a rented property and they want to come round and take photos of the house to market it.

They already have pics of the house, i reminded them. They have "updated their systems" and the old pics wont fit due to pixel resolution.

I said, its my home and im not comfortable having you take pics with my things in , they said we can enter your house anyway we only have to give 24hrs notice.

I dont want them taking pics of my things.

Basically do I actually have to let them in?

Thanks

no! i have no bloody chains! how has this conversation got to this level? hmm mumsnet friday night thing i bet....

its just really really private, i dont answer the door to people who havent called to come round. i dont leave the curtains open on to the street, shut the door from the hallway into the livingroom when I go out.

Just dont let people into my house really, its my sanctuary that no one else goes in. is it that odd?

Are they holding your deposit - if so I would think carefully how you handle this period. I've found that it's best to cooperate within reason with the agents to ensure you get the deposit back asap. Also agree with previous posts - that you should box all your personal stuff (as your moving anyway).

Hope your move goes well!

Lol at removing furniture before selling pics, I have never heard that one before.

Technically you have a right to quiet enjoyment which means unless they're coming in to repair something they have no right to enter your home and to do so would be trespass.

However, being compliant means they'll probably be a lot more forgiving about any marks on the carpet/walls etc that may effect your deposit and also that your landlord is more likely to give you a nice reference in the future.

What are you going to do if they have someone interested and they need to show people around?

Genuinely interested as I yes I do think it is a little odd.

I don't think liking your privacy is odd (although the shutting the door thing when you're out seems to stretch a point!) but I do think being obstructive to someone making a perfectly reasonable request because you don't want people to see your furniture is odd, yes.

ive never had much delaing with the landlord actually, always paid my rent on time etc and been there for boilerman etc...

My issue is THEY ALREADY HAVE PHOTOS, why need to come and take more.

I just dont like having people in my house, and ive rented for what 6 years and never had too before, or even to take photos.

Havent got there yet 5.

knitted if it makes you feel any better I agree with your sentiments. It's not nice having strangers tramp through your house. I hated doing viewings in my last place, having to wait in the house for two hours whilst complete strangers wandered around, poking about in my cupboards which contained my clothes, wandering about in my bedroom...

I don't think you're weird, or precious, or unreasonable. But sadly as a tenant it's one of the many things we have to suck up and put up with.

Have they advised you of the bonded scheme where your deposit is held?

Ok, i suppose i just see my furniture as the only constant in whats been what 9 house moves in 7 years, my furniture is all that makes my home and I am intensly private about it.

I dont like having people in my house, and the thought of having my stuff pictured and online makes me feel really uneasy.

I guess as a comprimise Il move all the furniture out of the picture, they can take the shot from the corner of the room and thats it.

no they havent.

I dont much care where its held, Ive been badly burned by estate agents before and pretty much expect to write off any deposit paid now we live down here.

mainly yes! my landlord is also the man that owns the letting agent that rents my house.

the photos are only 1 yr old almost the month. they wont need to spend aditional cash on cleaning my house, they can use my deposit

Could you compromise and offer to let them take the photos but not be a part of any viewings?

Would you be ok with that?

It is odd to keep the curtains closed and never let anyone in, yes. I suspect you know that, though?

It is also odd not to understand how marketing property works.

I live in a terrace house with no front garden and no distance between my house and the street. Thats the only window that has the curtains closed all the time.

I dont like people be in my home, unless im really fond of them.

I guess il let him in, he take one pic of the garden, the front of the house, miniscule kitchen and of the livingroom with my furniture moved and of the wall with the awful damp they havent got round to sorting.

just feels really intrusive

I totally sympathise with you, knittedbreast. I had the exact problem as you when we left our previous rented house. The LL was not sure whether she wanted to keep renting it out or sell it so I had to put up with both letting agent and a number of estate agents coming around. It is really knackering actually.
LL then wanted to have photos taken and I was really not comfortable with it and told her she couldn't.

Had she been a nice LL then maybe but this was one that had not resolved any of the issues with the property which lead to us having to move beacuse of widespread damp and mould.

I suspect this will be case last month there may be viewings though I not bet on it it was empty for 2 years prior to me .

Though lol pictures that be the missing ceiling then ( was meant to be fixed one month after I moved in .the oil tank that bordering illegal

The erm bathroom that never connected sO non working

But truth I do not mind as long as I have 24-48 hrs warning as have 2 small dc plus since can't get in the bathroom I can only get in toilet room to wash with door open

Hence no way I will allow them to just walk in With own keys and that they will need fit in with my lifestyle so no late viewings after 6.30 which I think is reasonable

MistyB I'm afraid I do think the landlord should suck up the fact that the property may be unlet in between tennants, it's part of the business, and if they want a tennant to do something to ensure minimum gaps in between then saying "we can enter your house anyway we only have to give 24hrs notice" is not the way to go about it.

If landlords are that desperate for tennants then it's probably a good idea for them to lose the house and have it owned by someone better able to let it out for a profit. They must've seriously overpaid, time to release the house to someone with more sense.

Even if you did have to let them in to take photos (and you do not, whatever the tennancy says, it would not be considered valid) then leaving dildos laying around would seem to be the thing to do rather than cleaning up.

FFG that's ridiculous. I own a property for rent, not because I'm a grasping bitch, but or complicated personal reasons.

I cannot afford to have the property empty for months between tenants, not because I'm some incompetatnt idiot, or capitalist pig, but because I have a mortgage to pay and kids to feed.

I know you didn't say that knitted, I was responding to FredFredGeorge's post that LL's who can't afford to have a property standing empty for a few months deserve to lose them

I would also like to point out that I think your LL sounds horrid (not sorting out damp etc) and I wish you all the best in your new place

thanks :)

there was also a plug socket on the outside wall in the garden- the other side to the rising damp inside. I had to threaten them and the council with alsorts to get them to remove it.

its just another move, another house.

im sure itl be better this time
