How could someone get treatment on the NHS if they don't have an NHS number etc? Can you do that?

Why don't you agree with her that it's terrible and tell her that you've read that the government are having to move them inland because the extra weight is tipping us up at the south end and the white cliffs of dover are now 6 inches lower than they used to be.

Sometimes the only thing you can do when confronted with total stupidity is to mock it.

MoaninMinny low profile ayslum seekers often go back for brief visits to see family if they can manage it (not all can get the travel documents to do so). They rely on not being there long enough to come to the attention of the political authorities.

Others, who have been high profile or are being actively deported by the UK and therefore the authorities notified of their arrival, are terrified of not making it out of the airport safely.

Some of my Zimbabwean family are here as refugees, and I've had exactly this discussion with them. They're hoping to get round the problem by travelling to a neighbouring country and meeting up with the DC's grandparents there ? if the grandparents can get travel docs, money to travel, and are well enough.

On the other hand, an Iranian acquaintance is in bits at the moment because his mother died without him ever being able to get back to see her. Iran simply doesn't issue travel documents to UK asylum seekers, so anyone who escaped Iran via covert routes or whose papers have since expired cannot go back.

Where are the 'facts'? I get sick of reading Daily Mail xenophobic headlines, I would really like to be directed to some sober, rational and informed discussion about the issues that includes some relevant and up to date statistics (if they exist)

The Refugee Council has put together a lot of info here, with further links to statistics from the Home Office, UNHCR, etc to answer these questions.

I hope this helps.

They are supposed to seek asylum in the first safe country they reach on leaving their homeland, are they not? How come so many end up in this country?

"There is nothing in international law to say that refugees must claim asylum in the first country they reach."
and
"The UK is home to less than 2% of the world?s refugees"
Refugee Council

I think in practice people tend to form communities of exiles, so Zimbabweans tend to come here and South Africa (I think in much larger numbers than here), whereas say Congolese will tend to go to France.
