To think The Simpsons isn't that bad?

I've noticed some parents raising their eyebrows when other peoples DC mention they are allowed to watch The Simpsons.

Isn't it on at 6pm?

Is it any worse than the violent rubbish that CITV spew out?

The simpsons is a nice cartoon that is suitable for children and adults. it is designed that way.

nothing wrong with it.

The Simpsons can be hit and miss - and you don't know until it's on which it is. The 6 o'clock thing doesn't mean anything - Holyoakes is on right after and I don't think that's good viewing for DCs.

DH used to come home and watch the Simpsons (I did like it too Blush) but when 2 yo DD1 started doing a naked bum in the air a la Bart, I had to censored it Grin...
But then, she thought that she would learn saxophone at school and that is (was?) cute. She did go to a music preschool Wink when we went out of the UK.

Oh there have definitely been moments when I've cringed and watched the kids reaction rather than the Simpsons.... but I still think that any experience that makes you uncomfortable is a good reason to talk (depending on reaction of kids). Gay men kissing doesn't make me uncomfortable, but I got mightily offended when my eldest said 'EWWWWW TWO GUYS KISSING' - and has to ask him why he'd reacted. To be fair on my eldest, his issue was the KISSING itself (like ew gross OUT) rather than the gender of the people involved.

For me its entertainment that has loads of opportunity for discussion/broaching subjects/talking politics/explaining satire etc etc., for my kids, its just fun.

watching the Simpsons (aka The Yellow People) has become a bit of a ritual in this house

dd1 and 2 (5 and 2) love it.

they love the Mighty Boosh too Grin (though we have to choose quite carefully which episodes we let them watch)

DS has always loved the Simpsons. It reminds me a bit of the Muppets on Saturday Night when I was a kid, in that it works on different levels. I enjoy watching ds snigger now when he gets jokes he probably shouldn't. I like that they call sex snuggling, it's led to complicated questions in this house being answered with fluffy Simpsons terms.
