this honestly isn't a thread about a thread....so no flaming please.

But as part of a thread earlier moon cups were mentioned.

Now, I am all for being Eco-friendly where possible, and we do recycle. I am no Arthur Fowler but we did grow a few tomatoes and courgettes this year.

But moon cups - REALLY? I just cannot go so far.

So MN panel......what am I missing here? What are your views?

Ianthe cheers for the enlightenment - i thought i was in another dimension for a moment!

Suffice to say i never get the squeak, i use a 40 pack of super plus per period and never has one come out 'dry'.

I do however flush them as i never knew i was not supposed to Shock . i thought it was just the applicators you couldn't flush Blush .

What should i do with it then?

When I first heard about mooncups about a year ago on MN my thoughts were the same as you OP. I was happy with tampons - ok they leaked, I had to change them every two hours on the first day or two and the first few nights meant a dash down the corridor to the bathroom with blood dripping down my legs - but I was used to it and the thought of the mooncup sounded horrible. But I kept hearing about them and so many people seemed to love them. Then last summer I realised my period would start while staying a large rented house with lots of friends and suddenly that nightly dash to the bathroom with blood dripping everywhere didn't seem so ok! So I decided to try a moon cup.
Month One: Found it a bit uncomfy, kept trimming the stalk more and went back to tampons a few times when I found the discomfort too much. Inserting it was a bit tricky, but had no problems getting it out.
Month Two: Better. I completly cut the stalk off. Inserting it was a bit hit and miss. When I did it properly it was great, but put it in too low and it was uncomfy. Put it in too high and it was really painful.
Month Three: Finally got inserting it right. Most of the time I forgot it was in there. Never needed to change it at night and could go four hourly during the day on the first few days. Since having my third child I always had a burning sensation around the vagina on the first few days of a period, but since using a moon cup that has gone. I am now a complete convert and never ever want to use towels of tampons again!

Spuddy, I flushed mine for years, but a couple of years back we had a horrendous blocked drain, and the drainage guy told me it was caused by a massive bundle of tampons that he then had to haul out of our drain. Blush

He told me in no uncertain terms that tampons should never be flushed (and yes, it was embarrassing being lectured on sanitary disposal by a complete stranger holding a drain rod).

Since then, I have bought some of those little sanitary bags and I drop the tampons into the bathroom bin, which is emptied daily. Pretty yucky, actually, makes a mooncup seem much more appealing.

I LOVE my mooncup and will never go back to tampons ever. It was a bit tricky for the first couple of months but since then I've found them so much easier than anything else.

This won't appease the "ewww icky" types but it is quite interesting to see what your body produces and, apparently is very good for house plants!

AuntiePickleBottom · 15/10/2011 00:40

i love my mooncup, i will never go back

Spuddybean · 15/10/2011 00:42

the thing is my tampon pretty much slips down the loo, every hour when i go, i just sit over the toilet and the string is saturated and it just 'splurts' out and down. i can't imagine fishing it out and wrapping it and putting it in a bin.

springydaffs · 15/10/2011 01:04

Before I used the mooncup I never used tampons - I found them very difficult to put in, didn't like the idea (particularly, for some reason, after I'd had a baby). I always used pads. So if I can not only get the hang of using a mooncup but end up loving it then anybody can.

another white-trousers-on-the-first-day wearer here. Honestly, this was an absolute revolution for me - from somebody who, in the old days, didn't bother to go out the first day or two because the chances of an accident were far too high.

AuntieDoris · 15/10/2011 01:32

I love my Mooncup. Took me a few months to get the insertion right, although even now I can still slightly feel it sometimes what I am sitting down so I still think it needs adjusting.

However, no leakage and my period cramps have pretty much gone. Using it isn't as icky as I thought it would be and I love the fact I don't have to buy more tampons.

Watching this thread with intrigue. Just wondering if there are any moon-cup wearers who have long nails? Tampons have applicators so no probs with sharp nailsConfused. Also, whilst nails are clean, I don't think they would be clean enough to go inside without a nail brush. Or am I over thinking?!
