To ask McDonalds not to charge me for extra sauce!

Went to McDonalds this lunch time. I ordered a Sweet Chili Chicken deli wrap, with no mayo, and DF ordered a Chicken Legend with salsa, and wanted it with mayo too (option is either salsa or mayo). McD's boy said yes, thats fine, but its a 20p extra charge. I pointed out that my order was without mayo, so could they not forgo the charge? After much (!!!!!) discussion with the manager, it was decided we could be let off the 20p lmao!

So was I being unreasonable?

Next time I go, I might ask for a 20p refund for having no sauce :p (I don't like sauce in general!). In fact if I ever get a breakfast from there, I order a plain bacon roll. One time I asked for extra bacon, as I saw some other guy ordering the same and thought, oooh why not! They charged 20p extra for the extra bacon... hmmmm... you know where I am going on this one ;)

Does anyone think charging for sauces is a bit stingy anyway?! I dunno, maybe I'm getting grumpy in my old age!

20p? You care about 20p?

TiarasTimeOutsAndTantrums · 14/10/2011 13:33

I hate you. All I can think of is burgers and chips and sauce.
YANBU DP makes me take a purse full of change when we go to buy extra sauce Blush

MoreBeta · 14/10/2011 13:35

The problem is your 'extra' portion of salsa has a cost. McDonalds makes a very small margin on each burger or wrap and if every customer asked for extra salsa then that woudl have an impact on that profit margin.

I heard about a catering contractor for an airline that made the mistake of putting one extra olive on each salad they produced for the airline. That cost them £100,000 over the space of a year and had a dramatic impact on the profit margin on the contract.

High volume food service firms have an intense focus on portion control. To the customer it seems trivial and annoying but to McDonalds that portion of salsa multiplied 100 million times is a lot of money.

In ops case i understand & dont cy it was such a big problem not 2 charge u in ur case. That said, i have worked for 3 franchisees & a company store. Some stores charge others dont, i think its mostly down 2 the franchisee, & how much money is lost each month in giving ppl exyra sauces 4 free (just like any business they want 2 make a profit high food cost = little profit or even a loss.)
iv even eaten @ restaurants (not mcd) who cjarge 4 tap water with ur meal. Im happy 2 pay this as they are prioviding a service they dont have 2, esp wen they charge much more 4 a bottle of water they can make more money on
if a business doesnt make money it goes bust. Simples
a bit of sauce or water may seem minor but it all adds up

worraliberty · 14/10/2011 13:38

So if Maccy Dees took the shitty pickles out they could probably end world poverty Grin

DreamsOfScream · 14/10/2011 14:51

I am slightly Hmm at £100,000 for exta olives in a year. That figure seems huge

RIZZ0 · 14/10/2011 14:57

Not only did you waste time and energy kerfuffling over this UTTER NONSENSE, you then wasted more by writing a thread about it, and FURTHERMORE, I shall never get back the time I spent reading it.

OR the time I just spent writing that.

OR THAT.

MoreBeta · 14/10/2011 21:11

DreamofScream - think about the maths though.

This is a major global airline flying 30 million passengers per year. Say 10 million passengers have a salad with one extra olive in. That is 1p per olive.

My olives cost about 2p each retail so 1p wholesale sounds about right.

McDonalds sells millions of meals each day - thats a heck of a lot of salsa. Grin

DreamsOfScream · 14/10/2011 23:06

ah okay. Ithought you mwnt like one individual putting an extra olive in the meals that they were preparing not the whole company

slavetofilofax · 14/10/2011 23:31

I once had an arguement over a ketchup in a drive through McD's. I asked for one extra, the man said no, so we argued, and I got my ketchup. That man was very precious about his ketchup.

maighdlin · 15/10/2011 00:32

i hate that the student union canteen at my uni charges 10p for a sachet of sauce. i get where the op is coming from NBU.

ScatterChasse · 15/10/2011 00:43

I didn't think many places (especially restaurants) could charge for tap water jimmijam.

I thought if they sold alcohol, they have to provide tap water for free.

Actually, I was right. See here

OhMyGolly · 15/10/2011 02:25

Tbh it was probably a till thing, if your df wanted salsa and mayo on his burger then the till will charge the 20p extra whether you had mayo or not. Lowly employees have no facility to override any till functions hence the managers involvement.

I used to work for maccy d's in my student days and the tills are basically chimp proof, also for some bizarre reason they refuse to offer mayonnaise as an actual dip, if anyone wanted it, it was squeezed out of the big gun thing into a sundae lid.

Please don't have a go at the employees, they are just trying to through the day without spitting in your food or generally going postal Grin.

OhMyGolly · 15/10/2011 02:28

Also I didn't charge people for dips, and I was very half-hearted about the "Is that a large meal?" crap, hence my one lonely star Sad.

KittyFane · 15/10/2011 08:08

morebeta :o @ loss off profit for the multimillion £ industry that is mcdonalds!!

KittyFane · 15/10/2011 08:09

of not off

MoreBeta · 15/10/2011 08:23

Sorry to bang on about this but the average profit after all costs but before interest and tax on a fast food operation is 10%. Many make a lot less.

I dont know what profit margin is for McDonalds but on a £2.50 meal a 10% profit margin of 25p would be reduced to 9.75% by an extra salsal.

Reducing profit margins by just 0.25% does not sound much but it matters a lot to investors in McDonalds. With wafer thin profit margins the control of portions is really crucial.

What OhMyGolly said is correct.

pigletmania · 15/10/2011 08:44

MaccyDs Charge about £3.60 for a meal, so much more expensive here than the US and half the size.

MissPricklePants · 15/10/2011 08:45

op as of december-ish mcds will no longer be able to add dressings including sauces to products as it increases the calorie content!products can be plain or without an item as it lowers the calories. Thats why the menu boards are now displaying the calorie values of everything. Also yabu as there is no till function to charge for extra mayo, it is not a create your own hence the option of salsa or mayo!

jimmijam · 16/10/2011 09:58

Yes it may b a multimillion ££ industry but individual stores dont make that much in a year - especially not franchised ones. Some of which make a loss each year (& i mean massive loss)

4madboys · 16/10/2011 10:15

really they wanted to charge you? the mcdonalds near us positively THROW the sauces at you, never been charged extra ever and lol at mcdonalds not making much profit, does anyone have any idea how much they make a year on average?! bloody loads!
