To remember word for word

Lyrics from over 20 years ago?

Was cleaning the kitchen after tea when one of my old favourite songs came on. Cue me using a mixing spoon as a microphone. I knew EVERY word, including the 'geetarr'. DD (5yo) wandered in to me rocking round the kitchen, rolled her eyes and left, DH is questioning my sanity.

IABU?

floweryblue: The Weather Girls, It's raining Men. That was around 1983 too.
Now ask me what I did at work last month and I wouldn't have a clue! It's sad really.

Imagine all those youngsters listening to House, Rave and Jungle in 20 years time going "Oh I remember this one, it goes dum dum dum dum..."

Joolyjoolyjoo · 12/10/2011 23:06

At least lyrics are remotely fun to remember! I still remember word for word some of the "seen" translations I had to learn for my blummin Latin O grade, 23 years ago! Can't see me entertaining the kids with "I, that Pliny whom you know, have caught a wild boar, and a very fine one too..." At least I have no recollection of the Latin version (or is that worse?)

CocktailQueen · 12/10/2011 23:14

Lol!! I still remember all the words to ALL 80s tracks but can't remember what I had for lunch today!! Hem hem. Blush

GiveMeStrength2day · 12/10/2011 23:15

floweryblue - I'm going to take a punt at your lyrics and guess that it's a song in the film Footloose. Am I right? Hmm Smile

floweryblue · 12/10/2011 23:51

The Weather Girls and Footloose are right Chriswhoisprobsameageasme and GiveMe.

jooly I can remember a bit of Latin, some Keats which I particularly loved, and even some Shakespeare.

give me the beat to a Prince song though, and I bet you I know all the words (well my interpretation anyway)!

floweryblue · 12/10/2011 23:54

I won the Golden Hour championship in my house at Uni by identifying Sly Fox in about two bars, my housemate (ongoing champion) was devastated.

GiveMeStrength2day · 12/10/2011 23:56

I always knew I was knowledgeable have a head full of useless information Grin

notlettingthefearshow · 12/10/2011 23:57

I can still do that rap bit in the middle of the Vanilla Ice song.

floweryblue · 13/10/2011 00:01

notlettingthefearshow, do you rap it in public?

raffle · 13/10/2011 00:01

More strangely I have sung along to an old song on the radio, every word pitch perfect, I remembered them all...however, could not remember the song title or artist Confused

floweryblue · 13/10/2011 00:04

Do you ever get to hear Co-op radio, they play fab toons! I am always discoing in the aisle [sad over 40 emoticon, should have leg warmers]

notlettingthefearshow · 13/10/2011 00:07

To my shame, I have been known to rap along (and not without a hint of pride) when Vanilla Ice comes on at a club, but only when the gin has been flowing.

And Buffalo Stance.

Perhaps it's time to stop clubbing.

GiveMeStrength2day · 13/10/2011 00:08

I'm pretty much word perfect to Rapper's Delight (Sugar Hill Gang) remembered from when it was released in 1979

GiveMeStrength2day · 13/10/2011 00:08

God that sounded like I was boasting - more like gutted to admit I'm old Grin

FrightNight · 13/10/2011 00:09

All the words to video killed the radio star and I don't like Monday's. I was 8.

But then I also remember my uncles car number plate 35 years ago and a couple of months ago called my friends mum on a number she used to have 20 years ago.

TheLadyEvenstar · 13/10/2011 00:10

I am another who remembers lyrics from 30 20yrs ago word for word but will forget regularly where I have put my blasted keys.

DS1 is rather impressed when a song comes on the radio sooo obviously a cover (to me anyway) by a new/modern band and I know the lyrics.

FrightNight · 13/10/2011 00:11

I cannot remember to turn off my hair straighteners though Sad

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 13/10/2011 08:13

dum dum der dum dum der der der der der
sheriff fatman started out in business as granny farmer
he was infamous for 15 minutes and appeared on panorama
then he somehow....

curse you thread.

NiecieTheTerminator · 13/10/2011 09:01

Frightnight - My DH remembers numberplates - he remembers numberplates of all the cars he has owned, all the cars I have owned since I met him and most of the number plates from cars he was responsible for at work (he dealt with the leases). That is sad.

Lyrics are much more fun.

It was very difficult to sit through DS1's school performance of We Will Rock You at the end of last term and not sing every single part. Thank goodness I was sitting at the back. Blush

Fixture · 13/10/2011 09:21

YABU

Listen to something that doesn't contain the word geeetarrr!

TheTenantOfWildfellHall · 13/10/2011 09:29

I can remember word for the word the introduction to an essay I wrote at university and then memorised (along with pretty much the rest of the whole essay) for a seen exam.

More embarrassing is the fact that DH can remember most of it too because I used to recite the whole essay out to him from my head whilst cooking the dinner/washing up.

I can also remember the words to most of Poison's songs and the car numberplate of every car my parents and I owned. Bid sad that!

And phone numbers from all the houses I've lived in since I was 5.

Need to get out more I think!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 13/10/2011 09:54

YANBU... In fact I'm convinced that one day, when I'm very old and can't remember so much as my own name, I'll be entertaining the nursing home staff with a word-perfect rendition of Squeeze's 'Cool for Cats'.
