evening all feeling brave to post on this section of the forum! So be gentle! Or tell me to fuck off!

Ok will try to keep this short a month ago we bought a caravan I imagined lovely holidays and weekends away on the cheap!

Fast forward a month and we've had one trip away me and our 3 kids loved it DH hated every minute! But it was not cheap at all!!! Cheap to pitch but cost us a bloody fortune in fuel!

So like I say a month on and DH wants to sell it i agree with some points he has made and he hates towing but think we will regret selling it in the future come the summer holidays

We have had a offer on the caravan we would be out of pocket by about £800 but DH thinks it is a good offer we have to decide by the morning

We could do with the money as we need to buy a new used car soon but I'am trying to be so sensible to just sell this caravan and move on but my heart is saying tell DH to bog off and keep the caravan for me and the kids! Plus I'm gutted at the amount of money we have lost!

So sell or not ???

Need a kick up the ass and a few belt the fuck up messages of support/abuse!!!

we only pee in the campervan loo - unless wild camping.

Op I think everyone is nervous the first time they go away and it takes some getting used to and finding a routine of making sure you have everything and have checked everything before you leave.

As another poster said you haven't really given it a go with just the one weekend.

We have met first timers on sites and they use the first weekend as a test rather than a weekend away. Thing is the next time you go if you don't sell it will be so long away it will be right like that first weekend again. Even when old timers change their van it is strange for them the first time away getting used to stuff and how everything works.

how about something like this for your dh here you may find something a bit more local to you

FabbyChic · 12/10/2011 21:15

Can you not list on eBay and make more for it so you don't lose so much. It seems to be costing an awful lot monthly and it's pointless keeping it if you are not going to be using it regularly, the money it is costing alone plus the fuel will pay for a holiday abroad once a year.

I get what you are saying about wild camping and the loo but trust me, I am too old and athritic to squat, I fear I would fall into whatever I was depositing in the shrubbery Grin

But I love wild camping .Grin and its cheap as chips

frutilla · 12/10/2011 21:23

If DH hates caravaning guess you should sell as it's no fun if it's not everyone enjoying themselves and it might be the source of future bickering. What percentage loss is the 800 pounds? You don't have to answer here, but it's an important aspect. If it's only a small percentage, I'd sell....couldn't you borrow one of your friends? Surely they don't use them all year round??

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2011 22:26

no fit2drop you got the wrong end of the stick Wink

if we go wild camping - well then we do 2's in the campervan loo to as well as peeing Grin I wouldn't even pee in the sea when little - let alone in the bushes

If on a camp site then wee in the portaloo and anything else you go to the loo block on site to do your business

Grin

Yep sounds right now Grin
But anyway my point originally (I think, .... well I got distracted ) but my point was that OP dh should not really have too much of a problem with the loo emptying process as it does not have to be gross and as long as the right products and chemicals are used it even gets flushed away as a nice pretty blue liquid Grin and to be fair , OP could manage that chore , small price to pay if she is getting the holiday she wants Smile

Stressymoo · 12/10/2011 23:33

Thank all for the advice things still undecided tonight :(

I do agree with some points though! I did empty the chemical loo! DH just came along to be nosey and got in to more of a flap about it than I did!!!!

I think discussing all points the van is going :( the £800 is not a small % really I've no shame in mentioning the figures that we Spent £4300 on the van and the awning plus extras (not including the cost of having the bloody towbar fitted!!!that's an extra £200 wasted! Anyone know if I could have that taken off and sell the parts??) and the offer we have had Is for £3500?!? DH is just happy to claw that back!

Sell it and buy a tent!

ThePumpkinKing · 13/10/2011 06:59

Definitely sell it. That's quite a good offer, and you'll wipe out loads if you store it over the winter.

Untill you can drive and tow the thing, I'd give up on the idea.

Your husband is having to shoulder all of the driving responsibility, and he disliked it so much that it exacerbated his illness.

It will just cause a lot of bad feeling if he's having to repeat the performance every time you guys want to go away.

Maybe next time, get one of the ones you can drive without towing.

A mobile home?
A lot more expensive to buy than a caravan, fuel costs and storage would be the same.

I guess I am biased cos I love ours but then we do not have the extortionate storage fees. Im not sure if its an area thing but as I said earlier the highest fee we were quoted was £400 per annum and that included excessive security, CTV, SWIPE CARD,to enter FOBKEY for double gated area ETC .
Not sure I would be happy to pay £50 a month ,
Our insurance is cheaper (done through caravan club) DH says your caravan insurance should be much cheaper than £25 per month. You are paying more than us and ours is a motor home which should be a lot more than a caravan, or should I say a caravan should be a lot cheaper than a motor home .

ivykaty44 · 13/10/2011 21:23

this isn't any longer than a lot of salon cars

ivykaty44 · 13/10/2011 21:24

fir2drp - who do you insure through?

fit2drop · 13/10/2011 22:41

Our Insurance is done through the caravan club, It cost us £35 to join and we have saved over £600 from what we were paying prior to being caravan club members. But we insure our car through the caravan club too so that £600 is a saving on both motor home and car.
