I've Just had a baby, 15 days old now, and had my first visit from the HV today. ATM, im too nervous to go out anywhere on my own. + none of my regular clothes fit yet. However, the time will come when i have too, this is what health visitor suggested when taking baby out:

Take a sterilised empty bottle (obvz)
Take a flask of hot water
&... Take the container of baby formula and make up when out and about...

Hmm Really?

Does anyone actually do this? AIBU to think, wtf? That's an awful lot of stuff to cart round, am i the only one thinking its very unrealistic?

I know your not ment to make up bottles nowadays, but am just wondering what everyone else does/did?....

I think you should start with the ready-made cartons, while you're getting used to everything. (When I was buying them last year they were 50p at Tesco.)

It's just one less thing to think about, you can keep a couple cartons in your bag.

Don't worry about your clothes either, gosh, I assume most mums are still not fitting in their old clothes at 15 days!

Congratulations on your baby! :o
When I go to family for a whole day I take the bottles, warmer, formula etc as my dh drives us. The tommee tippee bottles & little containers are good for when they are on smaller feeds. Starbucks always heat bottles for me. After a lot of faffing about I take cartons as my baby will drink them warm or room temp (they are safe to drink cold).

With DD we never bought powder and bought large cartons of ready made formula milk (SMA). DP did the maths and it worked out about £1 a week more expensive than powder but by god it was soooo much more convenient. I was also happier that the formulation was rmade up correctly and ready made is automatically sterile.

When out and about we would have a plastic jug, a flask of boiling water and a bottle of milk in an insulated cold bag (or a small carton depending on circumstances - the small cartons do not need keeping in the fridge) and then when we needed to feed, we would just put the bottle into the jug and pir hot water around it. When DD was 2 weeks old we had a full day out at the Trafford centre with this method. Dead easy. (Wait until you are weaning - then it gets fun!!)

Currently pg with No2 and hoping to use my milk on tap rather than bottles to feed this one. Here's hoping! :)

Good luck - you'll be fine.

The easiest thing to do is take ready made formula with you and a sterilised bottle.

Once you have opened the carton, it has to be refrigerated immediately.
So you may end up throwing the rest of the carton away if you are out and about.
