FF does NOT cause obesity, as stated earlier in this thread. And pleas don't say 'i Googled it'. I could create a website this afternoon calling myself ' Dr LeNom' and write any old rubbish I like.

A friend of mine who reports on junk science (ie, the kind of 'facts' often reported in the popular press) has met with scientists conducting a thorough review into research on BF vs FF.

They concluded that, when you account for lifestyle & environmental factors there is NO DIFFERENCE IN OUTCOME for FF babies at any stage in their lives. But scaremongering and torturing women who want to do their best for their kids sells more papers than facts.

Clambering down off the high horse now, but it makes me so mad when parents are guilt tripped like this. And I say that as someone who's BFing.

Le nom
About fucking time someone spoke some sense on here. The fact ff is more proliferate amongst certain environments/lifestyles totally skews the argument that it causes obesity. I was surprised to learn at hospital that it is usually the teen pregnancies and low income mothers who tend towards formula. I would have almost expected the opposite. But paeds and midwives confirmed this to me.

skybluepearl · 12/10/2011 17:16

baby rice is only a problem if you wean early then it's linked to gut problems etc ..

sayithowitis · 12/10/2011 17:54

it is many years now since I weaned DCs 1 and 2, so I do appreciate that in the intervening years, advice has changed. However, I began to wean Dc1 at around 16 weeks and DC2 at around 14 weeks. Both on advice of health visitor. for various reasons, both were FF, although I had started out Bfing. In both cases, they were both having so much milk that their stomachs could not hold it and the HV suggested replacing some of their milk feed with a little baby rice mixed with milk. It meant that they felt satisfied for longer than an hour at a time and they also weren't constantly puking back the excess liquid. I did this for several weeks until, again after a chat with my lovely HV, I gradually began to introduce purees and then lumps.

I have always felt that I did what was right for my babies, rather than sticking to 'guidelines' written by someone who had never met my babies and therefore didn't know them. Guidelines are just that, they are not rules. I made the choice to completely disregard the guidelines which said ( at the time) that babies should be made to sleep on their front. I always slept mine on their side (dc1) or back (dc2). Because neither of them were happy on their front. it wasn't until quite a while later that guidelines changed, to accommodate the (then) new research into SIDS.

And despite the claims made about obesity/iq etc relating to BF vs FF, neither of my now adult Dcs are in any way obese and they have also done very well in the intelligence stakes.

TrenteSix · 12/10/2011 18:09

i eat purees and porridges, there's sod-all wrong with them, and as part of a mixed diet post 6m or thereabouts, baby rice is fine.

The baby rice hate totally mystifies me. I'd understand if no older child or adult ever ate porridge, semolina, yogurt, custard, creme caramel, polenta, mushy peas...... but clearly they do so and I wish the food fetishists would stop being so arsey about it.

EggyAllenPoe · 12/10/2011 19:34

laNom - is that in answer to my post? if you read my post, it agrees with you (ie 'there is an association, the causal relationship is unclear')

LeNomCaChange · 13/10/2011 10:36

So Eggy, why bring it up at all? Most people will skim the thread, see 'FF' and 'association with obesity' and won't pause to pick over the semantics of association as opposed to proven causal relationship.

Your post does not agree with me - it makes vague and misleading comments. Scientifically speaking there is NO causal relationship. Not an unproven one, not an unclear one, but NONE.

This is a spoilt society that can spend time guilt-tripping mothers who are feeding their children perfectly well, when we should be grateful that we have good healthcare, good food and can resort to high quality formula if BF doesn't work out.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 13/10/2011 10:45

There's a good article here about BF/FF and obesity for anyone interested.

AnxiousElephant · 13/10/2011 12:17

It isn't particularly baby rice that causes gut problems, any food has that potential when babies wean under the recommended age Hmm Although guidelines for weaning are back for discussion in relation to allergy prevention. I think the age may be brought back slightly in the future. The problem with setting guidelines is that when it was 4 months mums would think oh he is only 3 weeks from that and start weaning at 3 months which definately risks gastric issues in later life and increases the risk of obesity.

LeNomCaChange I wish you'd been posting years ago. Smile

eeyore2 · 13/10/2011 12:38

babyrice and pureed fruit is a lovely tea for a baby. I have fond memories of my son's little smiling face as he eagerly opened his mouth ready for the spoon. Aah.
