The word forum has become naturalised as an English word surely? Can't people just say forums and stop showing off that they know using the Latin.

As long as you don't interrupt my train of thought.

TheQueenOfDeDead · 10/10/2011 18:35

YY to catfight reasoned debate, not least so I can appreciate the foci of others.

Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:36

Queen As nobody has come on to say otherwise, for the first time ever on MN, I declare myself entirely reasonable.

OP posts:
carabos · 10/10/2011 18:37

What about scissors?

TheQueenOfDeDead · 10/10/2011 18:38

That last post didn't make much sense I was just keen to get foci in as if you couldn't tell

I wonder if particularly wanky Ford dealership salesmen refer to their fleet of foci....

AurraSing · 10/10/2011 18:38

Not the same thing at all, but my old boss used to pronounce data as dat-a not date-a. Used to drive me mad. He used to shoehorn foci into meetings too. Wanker.

Sorry to interrupt.

Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:38

Well, I suppose scissors are technical a pair, so plural already.

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:39

AurraSing. It he only had one fact, did he tell you that he had a datum for you?

[small voice] I like fora - when I first worked for a certain three-letter international computer company they had online internal fora for work and non-work-related chat, and then we got access to all the outside fora of Usenet.

So it's what I'm used to and 'forums' reminds me that I'm an old fart even if I'm under 40!

Am I the only one who had to memorise lists of irregular plurals at primary school?

Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:40

Grin at fleet of Ford Foci.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDeDead · 10/10/2011 18:41

mardy I would concur.

Just off to put my spaghetto on.

Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:42

Just the one bit then...

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:42

That reminds me. Does anyone order a single panino?

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:43

notcitrus as you are probably aware, this is an entirely reasonable AIBU (waits for thread police), so you are free to continue with your "foras" Wink.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfDeDead · 10/10/2011 18:43

On a diet me Grin

Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:43

But don't you feel just the slightest bit silly...

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:45

Sorry that was aimed at notcitrus!

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:45

Besides I love citrus.

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:46

Is there a record for the greatest % of posts by an OP on a thread?

OP posts:
Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:47

And am I in line for it?

OP posts:
HazeltheMcWitch · 10/10/2011 18:48

YABU !

I do write forums if, for example I am on a forum. But a little part of my soul dies.

My caveat is that I did study languages for many years, so it does seem slightly strange to learn rules then blithely ignore them. But then of course, being the true geek I am, I could argue with myself to say that by its very nature, language must evolve...

AurraSing · 10/10/2011 18:49

I think this is officially your thread, mardy.

Mardymwahhaha · 10/10/2011 18:49

I studied languages too Hazel, but I accept that they change.

OP posts:
HazeltheMcWitch · 10/10/2011 18:50

And YES, I have ordered a panino - although from an Italian-owned deli, so again, there is context. And I check to see if my cakes are done using 'a spaghetto'.

Daht-a (vs date-a) is old-school RP, no?

dikkertjedap · 10/10/2011 18:51

Well, I don't understand your problem. Fora is the correct plural, forums is acceptable English. All about dumbing down really ....
