To be furious that my mother gave my 5 month old Coke Zero?

Apparently its fine "as it has nothing in it" Angry. To make matters worse it was at my little girls Baptism and she promptly spat it out over her baptism dress.

Yeah cos feeding coke zero to a five month old is exactly the same as giving a 5yo a chocolate bar or something Hmm.

I don't care what anyone says I would be fucking livid if my mum did that (although despite being old she has some sense so wouldn't have done). My babies weren't even weaned at 5 months ffs so I wouldn't have wanted someone else weaning them - on coke zero - family or not.

And if someone had done something like that then yes - I would want to keep a close eye on them as I would wonder what else was OK in their world.

What a fecking idiotic thing to do. YANBU.

Not sure what was so magic about five sounds right! Thing is their teeth were rotten by that time, and one child had six teeth out by then as they had orange juice in their bottles which the would take to bed and it rotted their teeth.

No one ever told me not to put juice in a bottle, I always diluted it, but both their teeth were really bad. They have stunners now though.

Doctors used to recommend 'flat coke' for older babies and toddlers who had D&V - the fluid rehydrated and the sugar provided energy I suppose.

So although it's not something I as a grandma would ever do, I don't think it's the end of the world really.

It's not going to kill him, but mentioning that it's not something she likes would probably be a good idea....

We had a maid who looked after our 8 month old on occasion, that was how he first tasted coke (he didn't like it apparently... we made sure we didn't leave coke in the house again), cornettos (Huge grin on his face as he toddled up to me gripping it with both hands, face covered in icecream) and wotsit equivalent (interesting coloured poo that day)...

Each time we learned our lesson, and made sure we didn't have these things available next time she looked after him Grin

Most people did that when your kids were young Fabby. My mum did it and I had bad teeth as a child too. Although she wouldn't dream of giving a baby anything of the sort now. Live and learn eh?

OP YANBU it was wrong and you have a right to be upset. Have a word with her when you feel abit calmer and if she plays the "Mental health ishoos" card show her this thread :)

TheBloodCountessBathory · 09/10/2011 20:32

Yeah I would be pissed off OP, but I think there are some over reactions on this thread. How much coke did the baby actually drink? A mouthful of diet coke isn't going to do that much damage (sounds like she spat it out anyway). Sounds like a very odd thing of your mother to do though so YANBU
