Wilf went and bought the dvd of The Velveteen Rabbit yesterday. There were no captions on it. He bought it anyway as he wanted to watch it. I have noticed that a lot of companies don't put captions on their dvds Sad
I actually took a major company to task a couple of years ago and threatened to go to the papers about them. (They had done a campaign advertising disability but didnt caption some of their dvds!!!) Shock Angry My threat worked and they paid for Wilf and I to have a trip round their film studio and met the creator of the company (think plasticine!!)
I think it should maybe put into the Disability Discrimination Act that DVDS should be captioned.

I don't know about the law but I bought DH the box set of House online, didn't check specifically for subtitles but it always has subtitles on TV, and it doesn't have them. It's a UK region dvd. Complete waste as he hasn't watched any of it because of this. Sure he could but it would be a bit too much hard work what with all the medical jargon etc and it wouldn't be relaxing for him.

MrsDanverclone · 09/10/2011 10:25

YANBU as all DVD should be subtitled.

Unfortunately not all are, which means my daughter (Asperger's) can't enjoy or follow the storyline. The option should be available in the extras section for every DVD released, it would enable so many people to enjoy films/tv that others just take being able to watch for granted.

Lottie, a cinema near me, has started showing an autistic friendly showing of a current release, after pressure from a disability group. Its usually an afternoon showing but its a start in the right direction. They also show some subtitled latest films and they are always well attended. Maybe you should approach your local cinema if Wilf likes going to see films, to see what they could do.

FabbyChic · 09/10/2011 10:27

all dvds have a subtitle option

LetThereBeRock · 09/10/2011 10:41

They don't all have a subtitle option, most do but certainly not all.

LottieJenkins · 09/10/2011 10:51

No FabbyChic they don't! Sad

I have the West Wing DVDs and while I can't find a subtitle option on any of the menus, if I hit the Subtitle button on my remote control then the subtitles come on.

I don't know why this is but for those of you with TV show DVDs maybe worth a shot?

tyler80 · 09/10/2011 13:26

Emsmaman

All my House box sets of DVDs have subtitles on them

unfitmother · 09/10/2011 13:27

YANBU

SayGhoul, Fabbychic you are both wrong.

tyler80 · 09/10/2011 13:36

Emsmaman Just looking on Amazon it seems that the box set 1-5 doesn't have subtitles. Seems really strange as the subtitles already exist, it can't be much of a job to make sure they're included?. The individual season box sets definitely do have subtitles so maybe you could sell the box set on and get the individual ones for your DH?

I do think it's poor of Amazon to not show whether certain DVDs contain subtitles/other languages etc.

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 09/10/2011 13:44

Thanks for that unfitmother - care to elaborate?

YY to the DVD option thing - we play our DVDs through the PS3, and hitting triangle brings up the transparent submenu where you can select subtitles. I know that there's a coding thing involved and some TVs / DVD players may not have the correct software to read the subtitles iykwim but the DVD itself should still be loaded with the subtitle information.

SoupDragon · 09/10/2011 13:45

my ancient DVD player annoys me profusely by automatically displaying the subtitles. I have to press the "subtitles on/off" button on the remote to get shot of them. No special DVD menu or anything.

hocuspontas · 09/10/2011 13:50

I watch everything with subtitles - I drive my family mad! You can never tell from the cover whether there are none (e.g. Rosanne) or they have just not specified the feature on the cover (e.g. Father Ted).

unfitmother · 09/10/2011 14:01

Err, yes, certainly Ghoul Hmm When you said that all DVDs have subtitles, you were wrong, as they don't.

I've lost count of the number of times I've had to send DVDs back to Lovefilm as there were no subtitles. Gosford Park sticks in my memory as one of the most disapointing. Sad

dreamingbohemian · 09/10/2011 14:05

I watched Gosford Park without subtitles, I had NO idea what was going on the entire time! Luckily I had Clive Owen to distract me Smile

FabbyChic · 09/10/2011 14:07

Every single dvd i have has and ive 200 easy

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 09/10/2011 14:08

unfitmother I actually said that I thought it was a legal requirement for DVDs to have subtitles post 2003, and that all the DVDs I own have subtitles on.

I think it's been shown on this thread that certainly not all DVDs have subtitles.

But I'm not getting into a fight! :o

SauvignonBlanche · 09/10/2011 14:15

Amazed to hear that some people own so many DVDs that are all subtitled! Envy
I'm always coming across ones that aren't it's really annoying. DH is deaf and for us, there's no point at all to one without subtitles and there's a lot out there!

unfitmother · 09/10/2011 14:19

No fighting desired! Grin

After watching Gosford Park, I had to ask DH who the murderer was at the end of the film as I had no idea what was happening!
It was great when it was on TV a year or so later - with subtitles!

SayGhoulNowSayWitch · 09/10/2011 14:27

YY - I'd have never been able to watch Game of Thrones without subtitles and reading the IMDB episode synopsis concurrently - I'd have never known what was going on! :o

TryLikingClarity · 09/10/2011 14:33

Do you think the answer is something to do with the TV's or DVD machines rather than the DVD's themselves?

By that I mean, it seems that people have to search in the main menu to find captions, rather than them being automatic. Perhaps this is an issue with the machines, rather than the DVDs? I don't know, sorry if I'm being dense! Confused

OP, YANBU though, I feel for your son not being able to fully enjoy his movies and shows.

LetThereBeRock · 09/10/2011 14:33

I have 400 plus dvds,Fabby, and not all are subtitled. In fact I have one of them playing as we speak. Copying Beethoven. A film about a deaf man, yet the dvd is sans subtitles.Hmm

unfitmother · 09/10/2011 14:42

Cheers Ghoul!

Hardgoing · 09/10/2011 14:59

Emsmaman my husband also watches everything with subtitles on for the same reason, finds it hard to hear speech (English not first lang), my gran likes them as she's a bit deaf, there are so many reasons they should be compulsory.

Andrewofgg · 09/10/2011 15:09

Lottie Who should be sued? The big Hollywood companies won't give a monkey's about the courts here and the wholesalers and retailers here can only sell what they are supplied with.

Tanith · 09/10/2011 15:34

It'd be helpful if they'd put subtitles on the TV shows as well. BBC are usually brilliant in that respect: the other channels can be a bit hit and miss, especially in HD.

Gosford Park is notorious. I read the Amazon reviews and a fair few people are complaining about the lack of subtitles.
