To Be Annoyed At School

When my daughter attended secondary school she was taught about abortion. Dont get me wrong.....I think all young people should be taught about the pro's and con's of such a delicate subject.

The fact that it was in R.E. lessons was a bit confusing to me and to be honest I thought they could have chosen science or something.

My real problem with the school is that they only told the students about how terminations were done and then showed them very graphic footage of terminations taking place. Not once in any lesson were they told why some females had to have terminations and that every termination does not mean that a fully formed baby is being terminated.

I just think with such a delicate subject they should know the pro's and cons.

Sorry festi..misunderstood

And yes it was definitely R.E.

I've seen discussions on another site, including screen clips (that's why I started suggesting find out the name of the film) and yes, the HTs did try the excuses I mentioned, and yes, it was generally religionists that push this propganda.

hairychesty · 09/10/2011 00:24

slave.....that is the point....it was that graphic....what do you think I am talking about when dd called the film horrific. It did not show short weeks terminations...it showed small babies.

As for it being better in RE....there were no discussions on the ethics or moral belief or any other fair discussion. Just one sided.

Terminations of small babies are one thing, nearly full term babies being hacked out, covered in blood and crying in buckets is another thing altogether.

The former is reality, the latter is reality only in horror films.

hairychesty · 09/10/2011 00:33

footage of a termination can be shown without showing a fully formed baby....not full term!

Of course it can, and I don't see a problem with that at all. It's the reality of abortion. So I refer to my earlier comments - if someone has an abortion then they should know what is really happening. If they are doing the right thing, knowing the reality won't stop the termination being the right thing in that situation.

PigletJohn · 09/10/2011 00:36

sorry but I feel quite strongly about that terrible propaganda being imposed on schoolchildren

slavetofilofax · 09/10/2011 00:39

You just said it was as graphic as Piglet described. That description talked of nearly full term babies that were capable of crying. Then you said the film you were referring to was that graphic. Was it that extreme, or was it a safe (for the Mother) termination of a small baby?

hairychesty · 09/10/2011 00:41

piglet....I am going to say goodnight I can see slave...does not want to believe what was really shown in a religious education class and under what circumstances, and it saddens me that someone can be so hellbent on wanting to stick to their opinions without grasping the true reality.

OP posts:
slavetofilofax · 09/10/2011 00:41

Piglet, reality only becomes propaganda when footage of that reality is accompnied by incorrect information.

Hairy didn't say that there was mis information given to her dd, she said that no information was given to her dd.

slavetofilofax · 09/10/2011 00:43

It is hard to believe what was shown when you contradict yourself!

I'm not disagreeing with you for the sake of it, I'm not sure I'm disagreeing at all. Just having a discussion and offering a different viewpoint to yours.

hairychesty · 09/10/2011 00:46

The incorrect information was that dd was made to believe all abortions were like this when that is far from the truth

OP posts:
vegetariandumpling · 09/10/2011 11:36

I had the exact opposite. No pictures, no explanations of how it's done. Basically it was 'sometimes women don't want to have a baby, and adoption is bad. So they get an abortion. They never ever regret it ever but they probably would regret adoption. Oh, and some silly religious people say this is wrong, but what do they know?'

Sounds very pro-life to me. Whatever it is that's a one sided view. Kids need the facts and then to make up their own minds.

Wehad ours as part of PHSE, our teacher was quite firm that she personally was pro-life for her own body but in terms of everyone else she was pro-choice. Really made her pro-choice but choosing to view it as a non-negotiable thing for herself but we were just glad to get a balanced view. And she was a biologist, a very good one. She taught us facts on that, about STDs, about consent (which a lot of places don't) and advocated masturbation over doing the act on a whim to get our 'hormones happy' as she called it.

We were shown this in school in the 6th form. (Non-religious school)
They used to do it every year with an outside agency, meant to be introducing a debate, they were actually quite pro-abortion in most of it, then showed that. The previous year a lot of people had walked out, and despite the person saying at the beginning that if you didn't want to see it then lo leave, the school threatened everyone that they weren't to walk out.
Personally I just turned round and read a book instead. Confused
