to ask this cyclist to use the road not the pavement?

I'm walking along the pavement beside a busy road, with my 3 year old DD zigzagging around behind me. He's cycling towards me, on the pavement, fast. And he's on his mobile.

I step into the middle of the pavement to make him slow down and prevent him from cannoning into my oblivious DD. As he whizzes past I ask him 'Why don't you go on the road?' He yells back 'Why don't YOU go on the road?'

I make an exception for children, nervous people going slowly, etc etc. But surely there is no excuse for a fit adult to cycle at high speed on the pavement?

I have a 3yo (almost 4). I don't hold his hand all the time, but I certainly do next to busy roads and if I don't then he's in front of me where I can see him.

YANBU about the cyclist though. I got hit by one when crossing the road once when he went through a red light. He looked incredibly surprised when I stood between him and my younger sister and pushed him off his bike. Wanker.

See Rule 64 of the Highway code here: www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069837
It's illegal. And for a reason - it's dangerous.

Grin although DD was not in front of me, I could see her all the time because I was walking in that style so familiar to parents of small children - kind of sideways, head over shoulder, answering non-stop questions interspersed with 'Come ON DD!'

In fact, it's a miracle I saw the cyclist at all Grin

But thanks everyone for reassuring me that IANBU about the cyclist - phew! I was a little bit scared that he would come back to run me over Blush
