to think the owner of this money was an ungrateful bastard and should have offered a reward?

story here

Two teenage boys find £5k and hand it into the police. They shouldn't expect a reward but if it had been my money which had been handed back I would have certainly given one.

Anyway, a pat on the back from me lads.

What good boys! I would have done the same at that age but it's just good to see. Yes I do think they should have been given a reward. If I lost a big bag of cash (as if!) and it was found I would certainly want to reward their honesty. I know being good is its own reward but hey - they could so easily have stashed it and this man would have been 5k out of pocket!

I don't buy the university fees story though. As if.

'Maybe the owner doesn't want a fuss' - well yes...see my comment re the likelihood of this being for uni fees!

Whilst Xmas food shopping very well known supermaket a couple of years ago, I had put the shopping in the boot , walked round to get in the car and found a wallet next to my car.
It had a large amount of cash and several cards in it, I handed it in to customer services.
I never received a thankyou for handing it in, although I left my name and phone number with the supermarket.

Ransom money. "You'll get your man when we get our cash. Fifty grand, a plane ticket and new passport. Leave it in a plain briefcase in the bus station. The yellow goose flies to Lidl at midnight. What can go wrong?"

discobeaver · 07/10/2011 10:19

Anewyear - that's cos customer services swiped it!
Cynical, moi?

I found a wallet in the street a few years ago, I contacted the owner via the bank details that were in the wallet and got a phone call within 24 hours. He was so happy that nothing had been nicked, and asked me to have a drink out of the £5 that was in the wallet.

I Express posted the wallet, and enjoyed a guilt free G&T

I think it used to be the case (and correct me if I'm wrong!) that the police used to recommend a small reward from owners to finders?
I've often found random things like rings etc. which I've handed in but never £5000!
Having left purses in phoneboxes/cafes when young, and never seen them again, I was really heartened when a lady handed in the substantial sum of money I had swanned off and left in an ATM! Blush
I rushed back to the bank when I realised I'd left it and went in to ask (without much hope!) and lo and behold!
She hadn't left a name or anything so all I could do was ask the staff to pass on thanks if they saw her again Sad.

personally I dislike the whole giving a reward malarky, people should be honest because they are, not to get an award, my DS1 and 2 have both found things in the past, a bag in which we found a lot of money and a phone so rang the home number, the very grateful woman came to collect it and we almost had a fight on the doorstep as she wanted to give both of them £20 each i insisted it was not necessary and was too much but she compromised and gave them it to share. A camera they handed to police was given to them when no one claimed it after a set time, as was some cash my DH found once.

One year, just before christmas, I found a purse in the multistorey car park. I took it to the police station and left my details and that night a woman showed up on my doorstep with the biggest tub of Roses I have ever seen in my life. She was christmas shopping and had ALL her christmas cash in that purse.

You can imagine how she had been feeling. Poor thing.

The Roses were nice, sure Grin but knowing that someone was not going to have a ruined christmas was just the best feeling.

I hate the whole idea that people should fork over some money or someone hasn't been 'rewarded'.

I found a wallet on the ground with loads of bank cards and £100 cash in it and it had a receipt for a phone top up so I phoned the mobile number on it. I left a message for the guy telling him I'd taken the wallet to the police station. He therefore had my number, as did the police, so he could've phoned or texted to say he got it back, but nothing. I wasn't expecting a reward anyway but he could've said thanks. Lots of people would've taken the money out and chucked the wallet away - I would always thank someone who had done the right thing at the very least, as has the bloke in the story. Thanking the person is the important thing, IMO.
