To start smoking again

Jen00X · 07/10/2011 00:45

I know it is politically correct to say I hate smoking but I liked it! I miss my coffee and cigarette in front of the TV, I miss the taste of it.

I gave up three years ago to give a good example to my daughters but I have piled on weight, I do not feel any fitter, I think I am more stressed (well I am at the moment) and I am no better off as snacks and new clothes are costing more.

It all started last week, someone dropped a new unopened packet and I picked it up. Suddenly I had this great desire to keep it, but I caught up with the woman and gave it back to her.

Now I am having to work late and having a massive craving, far greater then I ever had when I first quit

loveglove, I'm on Day 7 and like you, I very nearly caved last night, was crawling out of my skin for a fag. I was only a 1-2 a day smoker, always in the evening after dinner and I find that I'm craving a fab while eating my dinner confused. I'm using NiQuitin Minis - little minty tablets that you dissolve on your tongue when you crave a fag. I really like them, they sort my cravings within a couple of minutes. I'm trying to keep busy in the evenings too - my nails have never looked so polished! grin I think my skin is looking better and teeth slighly whiter already. Do you find the thought of never ever having a fag again really scary? I do

josierosie It is scary! I am really dreading the first "night out" where the alcohol is flowing. Then I'll REALLY be tested! I'm much like you, I was an up to 5 a day, all in the evening (I never smoked at work in the day or anything). Well done you and keep it up! Grin

Shock PomBear!

That most certainly is a life-changing experience :(

schroeder · 07/10/2011 13:05

at whoever said they are more-ish massive Grin

I can't believe I haven't had a fag for 5 years! Could still do with one though. I sometimes look at people smoking and think 'you lucky lucky bastards' but no I couldn't do it too my dc.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 07/10/2011 13:07

Spiderslegs he started out wanting a fiver. I so agree about Allan look at me multimillionaire Carr.

garlicScaresVampires · 07/10/2011 13:11

Blimey, what an arse! When somebody asks me for a fag, I ask if they've given up ... and won't give it if they confess.
... I'm taking the wrong approach, aren't I, I'm missing out on profits Wink

Has anyone poaste Helen Reddy's "I am Woman" yet?

(Helen Reddy and Ray Burton)
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again

Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

Oh, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand

Oh, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong

I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

My mother always smoked despite me and others nagging her...she died of cancer at 55. She never knew any of her 7 grandchildren.

Your choice, but you might regret it.

garlicScaresVampires · 07/10/2011 13:44

The song was meant for another thread Blush

Well ta everyone

I bought a rowing machine on ebay today, looking forward to it coming. I play tennis once a month and it is getting so much harder.

We are going skiing in January, bought a new jacket and trousers as my old ones got to small, dreading trying them on!

Still got my work done last night, stress over for a short while.

If your a heavy smoker then your probably better off nor restarting, however if your a relatively light smoker and enjoy it and miss it then go ahead in my opinion. A few cigarettes a day will probably not do that much harm and OK you might die early because of smoking but then the probability is that you won't. It is like saying I won't cross any roads because I might get killed, OK, you might but it would be a bit paranoid not to in my view.

Life is a risk with only ends one way

Andrewofgg · 07/10/2011 19:56

A colleague of mind who had smoked a bit when she was a teenager and given it up was diagnosed with breast cancer when it was far too late for treatment - I think she had done what my gender more often does and been "too busy to go to the doctor".

Be that as it may she took up smoking again. She had her own room at work and in those days she could smoke there, and there and in the open air (never at home) she smoked in a manner which would embarrass any self-respecting chimney, because as she rightly said "I enjoy it and it is not going to kill me".

And that, OP, is the only circumstance in which the answer to your question is No.

schroeder · 07/10/2011 20:19

garlic I think you could have got away with that.

I thought it was like that tape Chandler listens to in friends to help him stop smoking Grin

Concordia · 07/10/2011 20:22

DH's father never got to see any of his grandchildren due to the fact that he had a certain form of brain haemarroaghe aged 42 highly linked to smoking.

look up gillian riley OP, she has some interesting books on weight loss and the link between addiction to smoking and addiction to food.

spiderslegs · 09/10/2011 05:30

Garlic, Helen Reddy was perfectly apt, I have just got up & listened to her three times on Spotify whilsy smoking a fag.

Am now off to start a smoking only commune.

PS Rips - what a nobber.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 09/10/2011 08:55

This could have been me a year ago. I piled on 4 stone in 3 years despite not changing my eating habits. I started smoking again in spring this year due to stress and have lost 2 stone already. I actually feel better now than I did before I started again. BUT I know in 10 years this will not be the case if I carry on smoking. There are lots of things I can do to lose weight if I stop smoking but if I carry on there is nothing I can do that will stop me getting cancer.
Please don't start again!

Calabria · 09/10/2011 11:32

YABU

MangoMonster · 09/10/2011 11:45

Don't start again, you've done so well. I gave up for 2 years (pregnancy induced), then I started again like a fool... Wish I hadn't :(

NorksAkimbo · 09/10/2011 12:02

Don't do it!! I gave up 6 years ago. I've slipped a couple of times, because the IDEA of smoking is enticing, but the reality is that they make my head spinny and my stomach feel gross.

If you are gaining weight and not feeling fitter, it's because you've retained the 'sedentary' part of smoking; you need to quit eating stuff and really exercise. I gained nothing when I quit (well...I quit then got pregnant, so gained some weight!), but even after quitting and having two DC, I am still the same weight I was the day I stopped because I traded the smokes for exercise.

You can do it!

Amaunet · 09/10/2011 13:17

YANBU

A smoke is one of life's guilty pleasures.

Knowing that I shouldn't enjoy it makes absolutely no difference to the fact that I do!

LadyThumb · 09/10/2011 13:17

If it gets so bad you just have to give in (says a smoker) get an Electronic Cigarette. They are brilliant.

Mabelface · 09/10/2011 13:31

Don't do it. You'll regret it massively and will kick yourself. You'll STINK of stale smoke, your skin will retake on the lovely grey tinge with shadows around your eyes and you won't be able to have a good laugh without it descending into a coughing fit. I quit a year and a half ago and won't go back.
