To want a sodastream?

Please talk me out of it. I don't even like the DCs drinking fizzy drinks - but DH and I get through a lot of mixers - but probably not enough for a sodastream to pay for itself in the next 200 years Confused

I think I'm just getting nostalgic about the orange and white one we had when I was young - it was the 'special job' to be the one who got to fizz up the water till it farted Smile. And you used to get some lovely flavours like Vampires Venom and Witches Brew. I was nearly salivating over a shiny new one in Sainsburys last night but I managed to drag myself away. Help me!

jumpjockey you may live to regret it .. that's all I am saying Grin

cheekeymonkey · 07/10/2011 11:59

It wouldn't be bad for your teeth if you didn't use sugar would it?Confused

Does it mean you can make Prosecco out of pinot grigio? I REALLY need to know.Grin

mildertduck · 07/10/2011 12:14

jumpjockey you need to do it. FOR SCIENCE.

We had one when I was a child. Mostly we liked it because it made farty noises. Mind you, it does have the advantage that you can control the fizziness (I don't like overly fizzy things).

It also allows you to make that miracle of puddings: FIZZY JELLY.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 07/10/2011 12:43

Fizzy jelly??! These Soda Streams are miracle workers!

Hassled · 07/10/2011 12:46

I bought one in the summer - and a) it tastes as synthetic as it did in the 70s - so if you want that cola-bottle-sweet taste, you'll get it, and b) the novelty wore off very quickly. Kids barely mention it.

I do occasionally convert my wine into Cava with it, though. Which is nice.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 07/10/2011 12:52

My DH was looking longingly at one the other day because he wasn't allowed one as a child... I had one and therefore know anything that comes out of it tastes disgusting and that you use it until the CO2 canister runs out and then it ends up in a cupboard forgotten about forever!
Having said all that I'm still considering buying DH one for Christmas.

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 07/10/2011 13:01

seriously can you fizz wine? it just goes messy when I try it.

Hassled · 07/10/2011 13:11

You have to decant the whole bottle into the soda stream bottle. And then do it gently - fizz a couple of times, then unscrew and release a bit of pressure, screw back up and fizz again. It does work quite well.

cjbk1 · 07/10/2011 13:23

As long as it's still 1988 then YANBU Grin

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 07/10/2011 13:51

whooo thanks hassled can't wait to try, is it too early to open a bottle now Wine (please say no)

ThingsThatGoFlumpInTheNight · 07/10/2011 20:06

Fizzy Jelly? Really? How does that work then? Do you have to fizz up boiling water, or fizz the water then boil it (which I would have thought would make the fizz go? Confused).

And then when you eat the jelly, is that fizzy? Or bubbly? Or both?

LineRunner · 07/10/2011 20:16

Can you then add ice cream and freeze it?

moragbellingham · 07/10/2011 21:16

Think trois think!! Morrisons or Tesco???

JumpJockey · 07/10/2011 21:47

Jelly - dissolve the cubes in a little bit of hot water, then use your fizz as the cold. Works a treat :) My only reason for not having done the milk yet is that the bottle needs a litre of liquid to fizz. If it mings, that's a lot of milk...

007alert · 07/10/2011 22:11

The sodastream is one of the main reasons my dc like going to my grandmother's house. We had lots of blue stuff in it in the 70s but it's now used mainly for making fizzy water or tonic for the gin. I'm hankering after one too, but need to buy a new house with a bigger kitchen or utility room first...

LordOfTheFlies · 08/10/2011 01:14

My DH used to drink loads of soda water, it was heavy, loads of bottles to recycle and it seemed to get more expensive every month.

We decided to take the plunge and bought a nice one from Lakeland Limited for our 15th Wedding Anniversary (Crystal so it sort of fits)

Absolutly brilliant. Saved ££ , no more plastic bottles and saves me lugging it all home.
DS likes lemon and lime occasionally, but we tens to drink plain or a splash of Ribena.

AlpinePony · 08/10/2011 07:31

Yanbu. If you also have a big American fridge which makes ice, then you really are living the dream baby!

stepawayfromtheecclescakes · 08/10/2011 13:31

problem is getting the bloody refils and they are really expensive even when recycling, I have reverted to ASDA value fizzy water at 17p a bottle loads cheaper and I get 12 delivered at at time with my shopping. cant believe I am actually writing this.... how mundane has my life actually become Hmm

ThingsThatGoFlumpInTheNight · 17/10/2011 10:59

Exciting update - I am buying one today!

I am so so excited it is really quite sad Grin. I just needed to share as I am working solo today and had nobody to get excited about it with. I sent this text to DH -

"I've found a sodastream on offer for £33 so have reserved it to pick up later! Am very very excited, we can play with it tonight!!! x x x"

Half an hour later I got this back from him -

"ok"

[hhmm]

Can somebody please get excited with me?

squeakytoy · 17/10/2011 11:04

Whatever you do, do NOT put anything milky in it.

Fizzy milk tastes vile.. absolutely vile... and it will wreck the machine too, as we found out. You can never get that smell of sour milk out of it.

esselle · 17/10/2011 11:19

I really wanted a soda stream when I was a kids but Mum wouldn't let us have one. I had to get my SS fix at my cousins house.

Fast forward to last year I decided the best way for me to get myself a SS was obvious... I bought one for DH for Xmas. Grin

It is fab! I just need to get another gas refill if I ever remember!

ThingsThatGoFlumpInTheNight · 17/10/2011 11:33

So can either of you give me some advice on the 'extras' I need to get please? The main things we drink are diet coke & diet tonic. Do you know what the nicest tasting cola is out of the new 'zero' one and the 'diet' one? Are there any other flavours worth getting?

And do I need to get extra bottles (drinks bottles, not gas bottles)? I think it only comes with one.

I'm tempted to buy one of the variety packs but am imagining lots of the flavours in it are one hit wonders ...
