To wonder if any other Secondary School does this?

Have received all the details of the Secondary School that we hope DS will attend.

In the prospectus is a uniform list. Not just a bog standard list I expected, but much more specific - listing the shops that are acceptable to buy from, and even the actual trousers that can be purchased (with item codes).

Last night we went to the open evening and we were told firmly that only these pairs of trousers would be accepted. Also the Head said that the school had the toughest uniform he had come across and he was very proud of it.

AIBU to think that telling me which trousers I can buy for my DS (beyond colour) is a bit much??

I don't think a tie is any more practical for an office...in fact, it's not practical in the slightest unless you might need to use it as a tourniquet in a hurry or something. Otherwise it's just aesthetic, isn't it?

Have to say I preferred proper shirts to aertex ones though. We had those for PE and they were horrible and scratchy (and not cheap either). Though my mate would have preferred them as she had a phobia of buttons and they would've had less to deal with.

And don't get me started on putting girls in ties, as if they aren't entitled to a secondary education unless they are prepared to be surrogate boys...

Rhinokey - realistically I think if the prescribed style from M&S/John Lewis etc.. is straight leg and plain etc.., I am sure you could go with that basic style from somewhere else on the grounds of fit or cost.. Just not bootleg, jeans styled, stretch lycra or whatever else some places sell in their uniform range.

Really, I can't imagine that a school is going to be that picky.

YANBU we get ds smart black pleated school trousers 2 pairs for £4 in sainsburys, and they're excellent for the price if I had to follow that list hed have one pair, that's pricey for some flimsy trousers that one trip can obliterate.

personally, i would be kicking up a fuss. once i was in the school if you have to buy one style of trousers, I would buy one pair if that was all I could afford. I would be ringing the head up in a morning warning him that child was not in correct uniform because the one pair I could afford was in the wash and on the washing line and no, I can not afford a dryer either. if he got sent home I would be writing in and complaining that they were deprriving him/her of an education on the grounds of poverty and whether they thought it was acceptable in this day and age. ( i am particularly grumpy tonight though so don't take my advice)

but then I am the only parent sending their child to nursery in non uniformm trousers on the grounds that asda do not make size 18m uniform trousers.

do they have a second hand uniform sale? can you ask around his female class members to see if they have an older brother to pass uniform onto you? do you qualify for a uniform grant?

black Your nursery has uniform for 18 month olds? Or even, you nursery has a uniform?

RhinoKey · 05/10/2011 11:58

Black - I feel your pain. Our preschool has a uniform and DS is tiny. When he started he was still in 9-12 month trousers and I couldnt get any black ones anywhere. He had to wear jogging bottoms for the first year because it was all I could find.

Our daughter is off to secondary school next year and her uniform will be a logo school jumper and polo shirt on the top half, and jeans/any skirt down on the bottom half.

I am a bit 'wary' about this uniform as they do look scruffy but the school is a good one and this lack of regimented traditional school uniform is part of the school ethos. I am going to go with the flow on this one.

I would be a bit miffed if I was told that she could only wear xxx skirt from Marks and Spencer, but seeing some girls walking around town in their itsy bitsy skirts, it is not a bad thing to have a list of suppliers. Although everything seems so expensive these days.
