To think there's something...well...just plain WEIRD about someone whose ambition is to be a dentist?

I know they want to help mankind with their oral hygiene advice, gently chide those who smoke too many fags/drink too much coke, and frighten little children improve the nations dental health...

...but who wants to go poking about in peoples' mouths??

And possibly cause pain to them?

Maybe they get a secret thrill out of their scary reputation, and like the look of horror on peoples' faces when they're introduced as 'Vladimir the DENTIST mwahahaha' at cocktail parties.

(Can you tell I've got my check up in a couple of weeks? Grin)

This is your answer Grin

HeadfirstForHocusPocus · 30/09/2011 21:05

You have to give it until 40 seconds in!

WannaBeMarryPoppins · 30/09/2011 21:07

Great minds think alike HeadfirstforHocusPocus
I truly believe all dentists must be a bit like this on the inside Wink

Ilovedaintynuts · 30/09/2011 21:14

Money! I went out with a dentist a few years back - he was 28.

He had his own house over-looking the beach, a sports car and a boat. He was loaded.
I will be persuading my DCs to become dentists - I want veneers Grin

HeadfirstForHocusPocus · 30/09/2011 21:16

Whoops, I missed your link WannabeMarryPoppins , it was the first thing I thought of and just skim read to check nobody else had mentioned it before posting Blush Grin

WannaBeMarryPoppins · 30/09/2011 21:19

Don't worry about it, it was the first thing I thought about too. Just shows how strongly we feel about dentists I think, haha

MillyR · 30/09/2011 21:25

A dentist told me recently that they train on pigs' teeth.

DS wants to be a dentist because of the money.

DownyEmerald · 30/09/2011 21:25

I used to work in a dental school. All the lecturers in our department (Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery) were lovely. But they did do a lot of life-transforming work - cleft palate, reconstruction after cancer. I don't understand the drive to do general practice - apart from the money of course! A lot of the students were people who didn't quite get/think they would get the A levels for medicine.

DrinkYourWeakLemonDrinkNow · 30/09/2011 21:27

I've had more pain inflicted by hygienists.

There's def money to be made in dentistry though and how do you complain about that with a numb face? All I can manage is a feeble little dribbly whimper as I hand over my money and run away.

thedentist · 30/09/2011 21:35

oi!

Grin

Seriously - it's a great career. I can work 2 and 1/2 days a week at a senior level - it's great pay - one of the few careers with real parity of salaries for men and women - no weekends or evenings or shift work for me - and I enjoy working with people

It's also satisfying to use my brain and my hands

and ACTUALLY you need straight A's these days - same as or higher than medicine so I wouldn't have got in now

Proudnscary · 30/09/2011 21:50

MONEY and lots of it

So why do dentists as a profession have the highest suicide rates ?

crazyspaniel · 30/09/2011 22:04

My dentist is a scary woman who used to literally shout at me for not flossing. She doesn't do it any more because she successfully terrified me into flossing twice a day, but I assume that the net result of this is that she won't need to do more scary things to me in the future. I actually have two dentists in my family and they are the loveliest people you could meet, both wonderful with children and not at all like the dentists I still have nightmares about remember from childhood. It is a well-paid career, and much more family-friendly than medicine (which is what they had initially aimed for).

MillyR · 30/09/2011 22:05

Vets, doctors and dentists all have high suicide rates, presumably because they all have access to painless ways to die.

AgentZigzag · 30/09/2011 22:06

Hehe at the sheep in wolefs clothing, that is thedentist Grin

Is that true trixy, I thought it was farmers?

My denist beautiful, I mean raeally aesthetically beautiful; blonde, blue eyed anad my husband and children are puttin her hands .... now why would a pretty lassie want to poke about in other oples halitosis and absceses?

I have no idea.

Worse than a dentis t would be a chiropodist and any form of 'bottom doctor' ...who the hell wakes up and thinks their lifes goal is to poke about in piles and poop?

trixymalixy · 30/09/2011 22:10

Dunno, that's what my dentist told me!!!

369thegoosedrankwine · 30/09/2011 22:12

YABU.

My dentist is in the process of changing my life. Without him I wouldn't have back teeth on one side of my mouth (I am currently having implants).

Also, I am paying him £000's to do this. His hours are a lot better than mine; he never has to travel; his work comes to him and he has limited time with his clients. I wouldn't actually mind being a dentist....

AgentZigzag · 30/09/2011 22:13

See what I mean trixy, and I'm sure thedentist will confirm, they teach you subtle psychological techniques on how to unsettle a patient.

Tell them you have nothing to lose and they're completely at your mercy, and the patient will respect you out of fear.

Works every time Wink

I love my dentist, he has been my dentist since I was 7 yrs old and I am now 39 - I have nice teeth cos he cajoled me as a child into brushing twice a day and flossing by showing me pictures of blackened stumps of peoples teeth if they weren't looked after - niiiice!

Strangely enough though - he has really stinky breath now and I wonder if I should give him some of his own advice Grin

thedentist · 30/09/2011 22:17
Hmm
AgentZigzag · 30/09/2011 22:29

If you put 'dentist outfit blonde' into google creepydentist, it comes up <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=dentist+outfit+fantasy+woman&hl=en&biw=1146&bih=718&tbm=isch&tbnid=-EvLHgN4De08wM:&imgrefurl=cgi.ebay.com/XXX-Sexy-Naughty-Fantasy-Dentist-Costume-XXLarge-4419-/170136698393&docid=UrhS74MnKI-q_M&w=155&h=200&ei=ITOGTvDXK8Kz8QO7ut0r&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=483&vpy=232&dur=316&hovh=160&hovw=124&tx=84&ty=81&page=1&tbnh=160&tbnw=124&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">with this.

There being nothing for women to dress up as dentists for some twisted male fantasy makes me think about two things -

One, feminism should have something to say about this, why shouldn't women who are dentists be seen as attractive?

And two, what does this say about the freakery that is the woman who wants their DP to dress up as a dentist before they get down to some bedroom antics?

That would be some serious shit worthy of therapy Grin

My dentist is a lovely woman. I tried to persuade one of my children to go in for dentistry as a career, great hours & salary, plus I could benefit from free treatment. I need very frequent trips to dentist & hygienist, so would save me a fortune!
