to be a bit pissed off that after all the cuts, £250,000,000 has been 'found' for weekly bin collections?

Correct me if I'm wrong but after all these cuts to services and people losing their jobs, I believe the government has decided to make changes to the minor Inconvenience that is fornightly bin collections?

Yes, it is a bit of a pain in the arse but I don't see how its the most important thing in thw world and I'm guessing people are pretty use to it.

I just wonder if people are feeling like me, AIBU?

YADNBU!!!!! I am furious that they have found money to waste on lazy people's rubbish. We have weekly collections and our bin only ever has 1 bag in it when there is space for at least 4. I did live on a street where neighbours had overflowing bins and never recycled and I have to say I felt immensely smug in the cold snap when our bins weren't collected for 4 weeks and ours still wasn't even full.
In my Mum's constituency - where David Cameron is the MP they have fortnightly collections and not one of my many siblings or parents have complained and they all have average or more than average size families. They have a food waste bin too. Why take a step backwards? Is it sponsored by the big supermarkets who try to con us into buying more food than we need and then wasting it?
What an outrageous waste of money. I think I should start a campaign with my council to try and get fortnightly collections and they can then use the extra cash on something more useful.

halcyondays · 30/09/2011 23:32

We recycle pretty much everything and still have to squash all our rubbish done to make it last the fortnight. Wouldn't have a problem if we didn't have two children in nappies which in our case has been a long term thing. If there were no nappies in our bin we would have plenty of room. I don't recycle food waste, tried it for a while, but it makes your green bin horrible and attracts flies. People with bigger families can get a second bin, so I don't think it should be a problem for most people.

ouryve · 30/09/2011 23:36

We don't get that, Riven. I'm glad we've got one of them out of nappies in the daytime because the bin gets pretty nasty in the summer and the lid just doesn't contain the smell by the end of the week.

ouryve · 30/09/2011 23:38

Just to add that we have an extra recycling bag because we recycle so much papper card and plastic and, if our LA collected food waste in our area and did separate nappy collections, we could easily go monthly for our green wheelie bin.

mancinleics · 01/10/2011 00:11

A massive amount of the national funding deficit could be resolved by the government pursuing tax avoidance by large corporates and very wealthy. ARC, the trade union for Tax Inspectors, have a campaign Defeat the Deficit that makes sense but isn't getting much exposure.

I'd rather have a decent Royal Navy than more bin collections!

scottishmummy · 01/10/2011 00:18

yanbu,it is quite bizzare, wee pot of money available foer this.quite odd

CollieandPup · 01/10/2011 05:39

YANBU!!! It's scandalous that this issue continues to dominate local and national politics, and that at a time when fundamental care services are being cut and will hit the vulnerable hardest, that so much money is being found to fritter on something so unnecessary. Fortnightly collections are well established in most areas now, and work. If people werent so lazy and recycled properly then it wouldn't be an issue. It's cheaper, more economical and greener. People are just lazy and think they should have weekly collections because they pay their taxes, not because it's a best use of resources.

HoneyPablo · 01/10/2011 07:38

YADNBU
We listened to the news at ten with open mouths.

If there is spare cash then can I make some suggestion, CAMERON et al?

DH is facing redundancy because you cancelled the defence contracts
DS is unemployed as there are no jobs in construction
DD is facing an uncertain future
MIL is on her knees as sole carer for FIL who has dementia and has lost the plot

But, at least, we will get out bins emptied once a week.
What a farce, I really do despair. This government is so out of touch, it's just not true.

BoffinMum · 01/10/2011 08:32

I have always wondered why people in 1-bed flats get a whole wheely bin to themselves to fill where families of 5 have to make do with the same allocation? And why families of 6 or more can buy a second landfill bin but not a second recycling bin?

Jugglingjemima · 01/10/2011 08:37

I think that people in flats are in a difficult position.
I live in a terraced house and the fortnightly collection has forced me to be organised, and it is manageable for us.
Does anyone actually buy the daily mail? Will it not suddenly go poof! as tnotw did?

MrsHeffley · 01/10/2011 08:51

So far we've lost our tax credit, then our water capping(as you need to be on benefits to get it) and we'll be loosing our CB as our only income is only just slightly over the threshold. Well over £300 a month. We're not married so won't get the Tory vote appeaser for that but hey we'll get our bins collected fortnightly Hmm!!!!!

Our council is one of the best in the country for recycling etc. Has been fortnightly for absolutely ages and absolutely nobody I know minds. Just seems absolutely bonkers to go backwards-for a few Tory votes.

Surely this money should be pumped back into the economy to help growth. We don't have the luxury as a country of being able to afford weekly collections-environmentally or financially.Basically the Tories find money when they need it for their own but the rest of us can go hang.

JJ: Mail onLine is the world's second most popular newspaper site - millions of people read it.

swallowthree · 01/10/2011 09:06

I screamed at the radio when I heard this. Total pandering to the Daily Mail. Also contrary to the governments supposed localism agenda - with local councils determining priorities. If £250million was restored to local council budgets I wonder how many would spend it on bins - I'd like to think that many would go for children's services, services for the elderly and disabled people, libraries etc etc instead of something so pointless and non green.

prettybird · 01/10/2011 09:44

If this thread is anything to go by, then Pickles the government hasn't read the mood of the country correctly.

rycooler · 01/10/2011 09:52

I don't think a thread on MN (with less than 300 posts on it) - can be described as 'the mood of the country' - a slightly ambitious claim by anyones standards...

Be consistent with the localism agenda - let local authorities have the money and determine their spending priorities - with social services squeezed to dangerous levels, libraries closing and pot holes left in roads I don't think there would be many who would put the weekly bin collection first. Recycle and stop buying heavily packaged groceries please.

AnnieLobeseder · 01/10/2011 11:12

rycooler - that's a bit rich coming from someone who managed to claim that weekly bin collections are "what everyone wants" even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary on this thread.

swallowthree · 01/10/2011 11:52

Sign up and spread the word if you are disgusted by this pandering to the Daily Mail.

chill1243 · 01/10/2011 12:21

we have weekly collections. Black bin one week , brown the next.

I assume the 250k was put asside for publicity purposes.

chill1243 · 01/10/2011 12:23

sorry if its actually 250 million

prettybird · 01/10/2011 12:27

Annie - she obviously can't read interpret what is actually written as I did qualify my statement by saying "if this thread is anything to go by" Grin

Unlike her, I didn't try to make any claims about "everyone"
