to give the horses over the road a bucket of water?

Over the road to me there used to be houses, but the were knocked down a few years back and now some people keep their horses on the grass there (not sure if the housing association allow it or not)

Anyway today has been really hot and they have seemed really unsettled and i noticed one of them hasn't got a water bucket (whether its been blew away or nicked i don't know) So i sent my brother over with a bucket of water (then another) which it drank straight down. (dd gave it a few carrots too)

I'm hoping the owners dont mind, but surely they should be checking on them at last daily to make sure they have water esp when its so hot. My brother's going to check the others' bucket to see if there's any in there in a bit.

I've just gave it another couple of buckets of water and went to look over again and the people are there now. Not sure what they are actually doing, hopefully they will move it as there is no grass there for it and feed/water it. (was just about to report them too Confused

I know its awful, but if you are going to report them, you mustn't give them water. The rescue centres can only help horses in distress. Sad

You were absolutely right to do this. It's very common for horses to be tethered without water on disused land and the "owners" don't come frequently enough to check on them. I'm often having to sort out ones left near us. Council do nothing as they're gypsy horses and despite numerous complaints they just say that it's too risky for them to do anything about it Angry.

I wouldn't give carrots though - or if you do, cut them LENGTHWAYS, not into coins (IYSWIM) as horses can easily choke on carrots cut into circles. Best avoiding it altogether TBH, much as they love them.

The owners aren't gypsies, they had a newish landrover 4x4. (unless gypsies have these? I wouldn't know) They still havent left any water bucket or food or moved the poor thing. i'm not sure if they fed it while they were there as i couldn't quite see.

organiccarrotcake i generally just snap the carrots into 2 or 3. I also give apples when i have them. I tried turnip once but it spat it back out lol. How much should a horse eat a day?

Can the horse get to any shelter? Please call the RSCPA, especially as you aren't familiar with horses and their needs. I'm sure you can do it anonymously and they might even put your mind at rest. The horse will have a pretty miserable winter if they carry on (mis)treating him like this

They've moved the horses now (wonder if they're mn'ers? Hmm) I think they usually stable them in winter (well they dont leave them over the road anyhow)
