I can't help it... The lack of understanding from people about how to use dot, dot, dot, is frustrating and annoying!

Why oh why are there so few people out there who use the 'points of elipsis' rule correctly? When you use dot, dot, dot, (...) it is THREE and only three dots, not however many you feel like putting

Like this... Then begin a new sentence with a space
Or...like this (for use in a sentence

Please people, use your dots correctly, it's driving me mad!

Aibu?! Wink

OP, do you really have nothing better to do with your time than getting worked up about how many dots other posters put in their posts?? Seriously??

Witherhills · 29/09/2011 15:18

To those people that do know actually know what this is, can I ask where and when you were taught it?
I did do English A Level, but Eng Lit degree.
I actually can't believe that there is a proper rule about how many dots you use.
Admit it OP, it was me that pushed you over the edge enough to start this thread Smile

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 15:20

OP I disagree your examples of how they should be used correctly. All my degree textbooks say it should be written [...] and that not using square brackets has become common but is in fact wrong.:O

Kladdkaka · 29/09/2011 15:21

Witherhills I'm doing a law degree. I learnt it as part of that.

Pendeen · 29/09/2011 15:22

And there's me thinking you were complaining about the modern lack of interest in learning Morse...

Vallhala · 29/09/2011 15:32

Guilty as charged........

It's a habit picked up from a rather lovely man called Alan..... a naughty one but nothing compared to what I taught him...... Wink

fit2drop · 29/09/2011 15:37

Is there a shortage of dots ?

I have squirrelled dots away all over the place. You will never ever find them mwahahahhahah
and just when you think it is safe I will .........................................

blatent waste of dots there but I needed to prove a point.

Exactly what point I have no idea

I am bored Grin

zingzillachinchilla · 29/09/2011 15:45

shouldn't you be over in pedants corner? You should change your name to DotDetector or DoubleDotsDon'tWork or ThreeIsTheMagicNumber or some such...?

TheVermiciousKnid · 29/09/2011 15:48

YANBU. Grin

However, I have found the two full stops and one parenthesis that seem to have gone missing from your original post. Here they are: ..)

ChaoticAngeloftheUnderworld · 29/09/2011 15:49

I'm about to commit the mn sin of not reading all the posts.

Wrt the OP I don't care. It's a forum, I have enough problems with the shift keys not working properly.

GrimmaTheNome · 29/09/2011 15:52

I used to like, and over-use, ellipses; fear of being mistaken for DP was an effective cure.

horribledinners · 29/09/2011 15:52

My degree in English is from Timbuktu University and I'll thank you to know that I am well aware of ellipses...es.

garlicnutty · 29/09/2011 16:02

If the omission comes after the end of a sentence, the ellipsis will be placed after the period, making a total of four dots.?

If words are left off the end of a sentence, and that is all that is omitted, indicate the omission with ellipsis marks (preceded and followed by a space) and then indicate the end of the sentence with a full stop ? . If one or more sentences are omitted, end the sentence before the ellipsis with a full stop and then insert your ellipsis marks with a space on both sides. ? As in this example.

Whoo hoo, nickelbabe, that link is padantrytastic!

... And means that the OP is wrong Grin

garlicnutty · 29/09/2011 16:03

Tsk, pedants should be able to spell pedantrytastic. Even if it isn't a word ... .

NacMacFeegle · 29/09/2011 16:06

You use more than three dots, if you do it like this: ... ... ... ... ...

Grin
GrimmaTheNome · 29/09/2011 16:09

-. - ..- / -.-. .- -. / -.. - / .-.. - - ... / - ..-. / -.. - - ... / .- -. -.. / -.. .-

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2011 20:37

You can only use three. It is an internet rule, to stop people wasting too much of internet ink.

DigOfTheStump · 29/09/2011 20:38

It's ellipsis. With three dots. And they really should be space . . . like this!

TheVermiciousKnid · 29/09/2011 20:38

I am the DOT Queen and you will all LISTEN to me!

Yes ma'am!

....

Strumpypumpy · 29/09/2011 20:39

I know someone who talks and writes with... It is very irritating and I can hear the ellipses when they speak...
