To cut a long story short........ Moved to our lovely detached (this is relevant) house at the start of the year and everything has been fine and dandy, we have plenty of space, 3 large bedrooms, family bathroom, downstairs w.c. conservatory etc.... The house is 30s style with bay windows etc

Anyhoo, a couple of months ago dh were in bed on a sunday morning a lovely bright morning, birds singing outside etc and started to hear banging noises coming from the attic it was coming from both the outside wall where the bay window is and the wall opposite (next to dd1 bedroom) as soon as I sat up in bed it stopped immediatley. Then the following weekend it happened again, this time I kept myself laid down with my eyes closed and it carried on for a good 5/6 mins untill there was a loud bang that shocked me and I sat up, again it stopped and DH and I had the "what the fuck was that?" conversation.

We haven't really thought about it or spoken about it until now, we have been upstairs with DD I have been in the shower etc, DH waiting to get out of work overalls and jump in etc and started to play with DD and is jumping around, doing a silly little dance etc to make her laugh and the banging started again only this time really loud and was echoing DH's banging. This happened around half an hour ago, it went on for around 10 mins.

If this is not a ghost what the hell else could it be? I am at home during the day with DD and am now bricking it for tomorow and being home alone.

I'm voting for pipes as well. Are you sure your DH checked properly? Maybe a pest control expert could have a more thorough investigation?

ThePumpkinKing · 28/09/2011 17:51

Call a plumber.

Or an exorcist, 'tis the season and all that.

beatrixkitto · 28/09/2011 17:51

Charlie, but why would it echo dh banging?

ENormaSnob · 28/09/2011 17:52

Squirrels?

MrsSleepy · 28/09/2011 17:52

Clearly you are not listening to all suggestions of pipes etc

beatrixkitto · 28/09/2011 17:53

Lifechanger. We are detached.

Detetched indeed. From reality by the sound of it.

RogerMelly · 28/09/2011 17:54

It will be your pipes vibrating because iof the vibrations in the rest of the house. If anyone even touches the radiator in our dining room it makes hell of a noise that goes right up through the floor above. It made me crap myself aswell the first time I heard it!

Is you water tank in the attic too?

beatrixkitto · 28/09/2011 17:54

Mrs sleepy. Um yes I am and I am responding. Read the thread. I am asking for opinions and advice.

It'll be the pipes....did you ever watch Ghostwatch in the 90's with Yvette Fielding and Michael whatshisname? Grin

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 28/09/2011 17:55

Dunno what it is, but do you think you can string this out until Halloween, send dh and the kids out trick or treating, then go up and check on your own?

Carrying just a candle.

Oh and your laptop.

Would make a great scarey thread.....

It's not a ghost. Probably. Anyway, even if it is, what's it going to do to you?

My mum's pipes make a noise like a man saying Hiiiiiiiiyaaaaaaa. Much more scary.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/09/2011 17:57

You need to send DH up when the banging is happening. Or he stays in there until there is banging. If its the pipes he won't see anything but may be able to pinpoint the noise more accurately.

We had similar and I was woken up by the noise every day at 5:30am for weeks. Worked out it was the pump for the hot water which had got old and knackered.

beatrixkitto · 28/09/2011 18:01

Well we have been back up to the attic again or rather dh has and he's checked it again there are no signs of any birds/rats etc. We also did the banging again and - nothing. Not sure what is going on.

Our pipes bang, it sound slike someone is baning metal the way i described it to the heating guy was like someone standing in a big metal skip throwing big boulders into it!
Our's emanates from the hot water tank in airing cupboard but can be heard all round the house

TakeThisOneHereForAStart · 28/09/2011 18:04

Squatter in the attic?

Deesus · 28/09/2011 18:04

Well if it's not the pipes it probably is a ghost. Give it a name like 'Mr Spanky' to make it seem less intimidating then dunno...just get on with things I 'spose Grin

DoodleAlley · 28/09/2011 18:05

Have a check for rats they can knock things over and make a loud bang if they do. I speak from past experience. And they can sound loud on wood.

Probably a more likely scenario. As fir patterns in knocking we do tend to be programmer to find patterns in the otherwise random.

Hope it gets resolved for you

Was the previous occupant murdered?

Did the house used to be an asylum?

Have you ever been possessed?

If you answer no to all the above questions you're ok.
