And petty?

Ami I being petty? Made a lovely soup tonight, and OH comes home and DOUSES his soup with salt, pepper and nigh on a block of cheese. Insists it tastes wonderful.

It makes me fume!

No matter what i cook, its never spicy enough, or salty enough or too fucking bland. Ok dinner wasnt exiting: cauli and cheese soup but I used V mature cheddar, good stock, cream, salt and pepper. But I found it quite salty, my DD tasted it and commented on the salt thing.

So, Am I a petty and shite cook or has he annihilated his mouth over the years with chilli abuse? Grin

Deflated sorry, I just dont get wet savoury food.

Does your DH actually like soup? Not everyone does.

Many people have told me that I would change my mind about soup if I had their wife's/aunt's/grandmother's homemade consome/hearty broth/bisque. I have had all of these and they all share the same problem, they are wet and savoury.

Deflatedballoonbelly · 27/09/2011 19:57

Yeah, he is a soup fiend. Does that mean you don't like salty porridge or rissotto? Shock

What do you tell people when they suggest a twice removed second cousins aunties recipe? hopes 'fuck' and 'off' are involved Grin

Elderberry, thank you!

I've made that soup before and it is gorgeous especially with v mature cheese. I drown everything in black pepper..... BlushGrin

GnomeDePlume · 27/09/2011 20:03

Deflated glad to hear he like soup, that does save one problem!

I just dont like any savoury food which has to be eaten with a spoon (sipped out of a cup is even worse!).

I am never rude about the recipes (nod and smile, nod and smile) I just dont keep them!

A few years ago I did the LighterLife diet (which is either soup or shakes). I lived for six months on chocolate milkshakes!

IndieNile · 27/09/2011 20:04

I can look at practically any vegetable (except aubergines perhaps) and think soup. I love soup, so does DH, and we eat it about five times a week, so there! (pulls childish face)

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 27/09/2011 20:57

He doesn't even TRY it before putting salt on? Fair enough adding salt to taste, but to shake loads in before you've even tasted the food?

Right. Well, you know what to do, don't you? Stir half a pot of salt into his portion and then sit back with a straight face while he puts loads on.

[evil]

Of course, this does waste a portion of food. For some people that's a terrible thing, but I personally feel that it's worth it. Grin

I was on a careers course once where we were told that if you were taken out for lunch or dinner as part of an interview process you should never to put salt on your food without tasting it first. Apparently it tells the interviewer that you make decisions without having all the facts in front of you.....

minimisschief · 27/09/2011 22:51

omfg he is adding some extra salt and other bits what is the issue?

garlicnutty · 27/09/2011 23:03

Is there an underlying ishoo here, OP?

If he dislikes everything you do, YANBU and you shoud start a thread in Relationships.

If the problem is purely that he likes stronger flavours than you do - well, meh. It's rude to add salt before tasting the food - but, fgs, if he's used to your flavours and knows he'll need more salt'n'stuff, you can't blame him for bypassing Mr Manners - and HINBU.

jade80 · 27/09/2011 23:09

Do you want to eat it with the amount of salt he likes? No? Thought not. So why on earth should he eat it with the smaller amount of salt you want if he doesn't like it?

CheerfulYank · 27/09/2011 23:14

DH and I are the opposite. He doesn't put salt on anything and I need it. :)

garlicnutty · 27/09/2011 23:17

Well, yeah. You can't take salt out, can you? So you have to cook for the least-salty eater and leave the rest to add their own.

Gosh, this is a bit like King Lear isn't it? Hmm

SurprisEs · 27/09/2011 23:22

I know most people and definitely everyone in my family would hate my food as I rarely put salt. I prefer to use herbs and other stuff. My answer is 'you can add salt but I can't take it away and I hate it'

LadyBeagleEyes · 27/09/2011 23:27

I cook with the minimum salt, and then add it to everything.
I make leak and potato soup with crunchy french bread and butter often as a winter evening meal.
And then have a big fat pudding.
