Was packing my shopping today, and while i usually take my own bags...today i forgot. I was asked if i wanted some bags, and the girl quite obviously licked her fingers to separate them and then passed them over. Now, i know the best way to separate plastic bags is to do this, and have done it myself, but only for myself! When i used to work in a supermarket i was told during my training that this was not allowed due to hygiene reasons, i would never pass a bag with my saliva on to a customer!! After i watched her do this i bought some more bags as i couldnt face using these ones, i feel like im being silly, and then i think i have good reason! ??????

I have never, ever thought about this. It's like a whole new world of things to worry about Confused.

Unless she's also licking your food as she beeps it, I think you're BU.

YABU.

YABU. There could be just as many germs on hands as in saliva, and you don't object to her using her hands to pass you the bags, do you?

Some people seem to think we'll only be safe when the entire world has been dunked in Dettol.

I do that to open bags at work but I work in a toy shop so it's only your kids that you need to worry about... on the other hand I have 8 hours a day where I watch all sorts of people come in the shop and handle the products, show them to their baby, let the baby have a chew and then put them back on the shelf.
As for it being unhygienic because of some saliva... you do realise that products arnt sterile on the shelf dont you? They pass through so many different hands/machines/vehicles even get sat on during quick breaks on the delivery Grin

My mum once berated a cashier for doing this. I cringed behind her whilst trying to pretend I wasn't with her!! I think you're being a bit precious OP.

Have just gone through the bag licking thing in my head and actually when you do this you only touch the outside of the bag. Not sure it matters too much then. Think this is Along lines of not using loo roll tubes because of the health risk.

this reminds me of a woman i used to serve in the bank.

she would hold her purse towards you with the note part spread open by the very tips of her fingers while she turned her head to the side and wrinkled up her nose. the first time i met her i didn't know she had hygiene issues and i asked her how much money was there as i wasn't alowed to take it without first being told the amount by the customer.she screeched back at me "I don't know, you dont expect me to handle that filthy stuff!!" it turned out she lodged money for her partner and she got him to put the money in her purse and the cashiers had to take it out so at no point would she have to touch it. she also refused to touch the door handle with her hands and would push it with her elbow or bag.

YANBU. I don't fear germs but I just find the idea of putting my hand in someone elses cold, wet, spit when I pick my bag up unpleasant. Urine is apparently sterile but I wouldn't want the cashier to piss on her fingers before getting my bag either.

It wouldn't bother me. I'm more put off by people in sandwich shops who wear 'hygiene' gloves in order to make up your sandwich but keep them on to touch the till and handle your money.
