Hi I usually always take gps advice and respect their training etc. However yesterday my dd2 had her 6 week check. Contraception came up in the appointment- I explained where I do want more children I want a gap of minimum 3 yrs before ttc.
Now her advice was as you are bfeeding exclusively you won't need to use anything until she is weaned.
Now dd2 sleeps for up to 8 hrs in a row some nights and was concieved very easily.
Is bfeeding reliable contraception?

No No No utter bollocks (I am ex-doctor). Was she a a young GP? Please report this to the practice manager or take it up with another GP in the practice. She needs to STOP giving this advice.

she wasnt young- Id say latet 30's early 40's. Luckily its my second dd and second time bfeeding so I thought to question (as last time the m/w echoed your advice). However, with all the changing advice I was unsure. I'm glad for the quick response, I have my hands full with a baby and a toddler- dont know how i would do it if I was preg!

It's possible that GP overinterpreted the facts "two children already, does want another, but wants to space them out, doesn't want to get pg before her wedding" as meaning "would prefer a gap but isn't too fussed, 75% reliable contraception is good enough".
This may be appropriate in some circumstances, but it is never the GP's choice to make, she should have advised you explicitly that bf is better contraception than nothing at all, but if you really don't want to have another baby in the next 18 months you need to use other methods.
