Getting house in joint names

I know this is not the correct forum but it gets the most traffic and I need advice.

DP has always owned our homes jn his name but I want that to change when we buy next year. I don't work (SAHM) and I know he will argue that as I don't have a job I can't be on the mortgage. Can anyone clarify for me if this is true? I needs some financial security for me and the DC's. TIA

OP - you need to talk now - before houses are looked at, while you have a few months left on your current tenancy, when you have time to look around at other options and plan your future.

Personally, I'd be pushing for marriage but be prepared to settle for legal protection (it's not just about what happens if he leaves you, but what happens if he was to die - he can sit there and promise not to leave you, can he promise he won't get hit by a bus?) - you need to be on the deeds, you need a will to be drawn up leaving everything to you and the DCs, others have mentioned life insurance and pensions, I wasn't even aware of the pension issue, you need to discuss that too. Quite frankly, it'd be easier to quietly get married.

If he's not prepared to marry you, you have to accept whatever else he says, he doesn't see you as someone he will spend the rest of his life with. While you might get finanical help until your DCs leave home, unless you had them very late in life, you need to be able to provide for yourself after that for a few decades. I would suggest looking at going back to work and sharing childcare costs - while you might not be any better off as a family now, if he does dump you, you will at least have a career to fall back on.
