to buy almost all DS's clothes from the supermarket?

My friend thinks I'm a real cheapskate. Both our DCs are 18 months old (her's is a DD, mine's a DS) and we were talking about clothes, how they grow so quickly, get covered in mud/poo/orange and I told her I don't fuss about DS getting mucky because I buy all of his clothes from Sainsbury's/Asda/Tesco. She looked at me like this Hmm and diplomatically told me that she thinks that is really tacky. I'm not offended at all (she wouldn't have known if I hadn't said, which I think proves my point) but the clothes I buy DS have all worn really well, are colour-fast, are made from quite nice, thick cotton and aren't emblazoned with Disney and slogans, so what's the problem? I think it's a criminal waste of money to buy clothes that look almost exactly the same from Boden or wherever and then worry about DC getting dirty through normal play and general existence, especially when they need a whole new wardrobe every 6 months anyway. When DS is older (and less likely to have food dribbling down his chin) I don't mind spending a bit more. AIBU?

What a twat your friend is!

Firawla · 22/09/2011 14:14

vivi that must be a fun job!

Bramshott · 22/09/2011 14:17

YABU - charity shops are usually much better quality and better value!

ViviPru · 22/09/2011 14:18

Well, Firawla, the other day I had to make a cat look like it was playing a guitar (no mean feat) and I was once asked if I could make the donkey that was in side profile in the photograph face the front instead Hmm but there are certainly worse way of paying the bills :)

AKMD · 22/09/2011 14:21

Bramshott I'm afraid even I draw the line at going to charity shops to buy greying George clothes, which is all you would find around here. Hand-me-down George is FREE and therefore cheerfully accepted :o

Ds is 15 and t shirts are from Tu, and trousers from Tesco as he is growing like a weed, and I'd rather not spend the fortune I'd have to spend in Brussels for his clothes. Jeans are M&S £9.50, as again, he grows fast.

I have also found a cheapish sports shop which does No Fear and Russell Athletic for reasonable prices out here. I may lash him up to Levis and Superdry for sixth form, but not at the moment.

I used to buy Boden in the sale, but he's in men's sizes now, so expensive.

There is nothing wrong with supermarket clothes; some of his nicest stuff was from Woolworths as a toddler, and the women's waterfall cardis in Sainsbury are nice quality and a good price. Why not?

PopcornMouse · 22/09/2011 14:35

YANBU. 90% of my clothes come from sainsburys, asda and primark. I'd rather have cheap clothes than credit card debt! :o

aldiwhore · 22/09/2011 14:36

YANBU at all. I have two boys, and supermarket clothes are great for them, there's a few bum ones, but mostly they are great.

storminateacup10 · 22/09/2011 14:49

who cares where kids' clothes come from? to worry about labels for childrens that age is absurd! if you can find good, cheap stuff from a supermarket, ebay, charity shops or the moon, then go for it and to hell what anyone else thinks! I try to buy mixture of the above...and also big into sales- where I can pick up a normally expensive outfit at asds price if I get it 1/2 years ahead of time- has saved me a fortune.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 22/09/2011 16:05

OP, is your friend Katie Holmes?

usualsuspect · 22/09/2011 16:07

yanbu I buy most of my clothes from Asda and Primark

fatlazymummy · 22/09/2011 16:23

All our clothes come from Supermarkets and Primark etc. I used to get compliments on how nice my kids looked.
Your friend sounds a bit strange to me, TBH.

valiumredhead · 22/09/2011 16:27

My ds is 10 and apart from gifts all of his clothes come from Asda's or Tescos as do the majority of his friend's clothes too.
