AIBU to be annoyed with the number of shops who want your details...

I've been out shopping this morning for DP's birthday presents. I went in 4 stores and 3 out of the 4 asked for my postcode at the till as they scanned my goods.

AIBU to find this intrusive, not to mention annoying? I'm buying stuff from the shop, it's a transaction, they don't need to know my address. I assume the only reason is so they can send me marketing tat?

If they ask for your details when giving a refund, it's to a) ensure the cashier has actually given a refund to a customer rather than to themselves, and b) to check you give correct details and are not a fraudster (these would be checked later by head office, not by the staff in store unless they were already suspicious). If the item's faulty a signature should suffice if you don't want to give your details, if it's not faulty then the store can ask whatever they like as they don't have to reufnd you anyway.

If they ask you when buying television receiving equipment it's to pass on to TV Licencing. Legally they have to do this and cannot sell the item to you if you refuse, as they get fined.

If they do a standard postcode check at the till, it's more than likely, as PPs have said, a survey to see how far people travel. If they have large numbers travelling from a particular area they may look to see if they can open a store there. Nothing to stop you refusing that one either.

When you buy a TV or anything capable of receiving transmissions, they have to take youyr details by law for the TV License drones. Whether they use that for other purposes or not is a different matter.
