AIBU?

To not let DD (6) watch CBBC?

Had it on for 10 mins this morning and they are showing severed heads on horrible histories... Ok should have taken cue by the name but DD felt so sick she didn't want to eat her breakfast.

Then there's Tracey Beaker. They always seem to be shouting and each other and being badly behaved in general, I think it's a poor depiction of life in care and a bit stereotypical. DH grew up in care and it really pisses him off how naughty the kids are shown to be.

I think my 2 just are not that bothered and don't follow the 'act' of what they see on TV, Both have watched Horrid Henry and it didn't make them horrid.

RedOnion I am sure there is a long queue on MN for Steve Backshall! Perhaps the queue for Charles II is shorter and I should just stick with that...

But I can dream!

Ah - my objection to TB is not that she's badly behaved, but just that it's so sad and I think my older DD (6) who is very insecure and needs constant reassurance would be too upset by the absence of a loving parent, and the way she constantly craves her mum's love, but is disappointed. She's not upset by the rather pantomime violence on HH, by contrast.

You can keep your Charles II, no ishoos there. Grin

Slippery slope? The slippery slope started a lot longer ago, when my youngest became a doctor who fan aged 3 months Grin

I think you just have to make a call based on your own child. Children vary so much. At 6 my DD would have been ghoulishly interested in severed heads, my DS would have had nightmares.

Just look through the programmes and see if you think there's anything suitable for her, if not turn it off.

People feel strongly about different things. I feel very strongly about age appropriate tv and films. I have a big age gap here too, and when they were smaller I was very strict about making sure that there was shared tv and tv suitable for my older one only. If it was the younger one's turn, the older one could either watch his programmes or go and do something else. If it was her turn, and she wanted to watch something not suitable for him, he did something else. Not difficult, and now means that now she's 15 and he's 10, she can watch the ghastly stuff teenagers watch and I can tell him he's not allowed. Because that's how it's always been.

For me and my boys, they LOVE horrible histories and the severed heads are fun, it neither disturbs them or excites them. So for me and mine, its appropriate... my youngest is four. My eldest is 8.

I hate Tracey Beaker, and Horrid Henry on CITV, but its not worse than Denis the Mennis or Beryl the Peril.....

BUT... your house, your rules. Though I salute horrible histories, my 8 year old has a very good, general idea of eras in history and its fostered a need for him to know more.

I feel strongly about age appropriate TV etc however I don't think a bit of HH or Tracy Beaker is likely to send the 3yo off the rails is it. Bit different if she the 8yo was 15 and watching horror etc... Maybe I'm just too relaxed. And I'm hardly going to ban either of them from the living room because they are watching their own programs.

Actually I really like Horrible Histories and Deadly 60.

I am really careful about what my children watch but I do use my judgement. DS is 12 so obviously that's ok, but DD also likes the above programmes.

And Dr Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Harry Potter.

Don't watch any other CBBC though. It's generally rubbish.

"I never know whether I'm a lax mum or a realist after I've been on Mumsnet." Ha, join the club pictish! I think I'm a good mum, my children aren't scared of nonsense and we watch these (esp DW and HP) together as a family. I'm sure there are plenty on there that would be 'horrified' at this though Grin.

I have a 6 year old dd, and she started watching CBBC a few weeks ago, tbh I wasn't sure at the start but she then explained to me that her great grannys nursing home was a bit like a care home for older people where they would be looked after and she asked for an atlas so she could see where Deadly 60 was that day - all in all I'm all for it.

Don't put it on before breakfast then - simples - Smile
Seriously, HH is brilliant - it's won awards and everything, so based on that, YABU! Just record what you think is suitable and let her watch that.

DS is 4 and loves Horrible Histories - it also afforded me a fabulous smug mother moment when he loudly identified a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I in a museum.

There is no real point in canvassing opinions about this though because what is suitable/enjoyable for one child will not be for another. If your daughter is scared of HH (really though? actually made her feel sick?) and you think TB is unsuitable don't let her watch them. For the love of God don't put CITV on if you don't like CBBC though.
