to object to Virgin sending porn links to my phone

I use Virgin for my mobile phone. I was using it to browse Twitter and saw an interesting link about drug taking and clicked on it. I got an error message saying something like: "This is adult content. You can't access it unless you phone us to confirm you are over 18 or change your account settings via our website."

Firstly - how very dare they try to censor my use of the internet? But to add insult to injury, having pegged me as someone interested in "adult content", my internet browser then started showing loads of links to porn sites.

Can anyone help me draft my outraged email to customer services?

Drug taking isn't porn. get a grip.

as far as i'm aware, you have to verify your age with most mobile phone internet thingies- it's to stop kids accessing things they shouldn't.

Virgin mobile had a fault this week with their adult content controls on the internet, I'm told it is fixed now....

minimisschief · 20/09/2011 07:18

i am pretty sure that virgin do not have control over advertisements on the internet.

It wasn't porn anyway. And they censor the phone to stop children accessing adult content. if you want it then phone them up

StuckUpTheFarawayTree · 20/09/2011 07:21

Misschief is correct. I have had to ring my provider to enable stuff before (not porn, I hasten to add!)

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/09/2011 07:45

They didn't send you anything Confused

Have you had your adult contact lock removed? I assume you have as you can access Twitter, in which case it sounds like dreamcase has it.

"Adult" does not mean pornography. Information on sexual health matters, drugs and all sorts of perfectly sensible topics get labelled thus as well as porn. Hence ISPs controlling content is problematic.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/09/2011 07:46

dreamworld sorry!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 20/09/2011 07:48

And I should have said ISPs controlling access to content is problematic.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 20/09/2011 08:37

It is the same with o2 in that you have to confirm that you are adult.

Any browser with cookies enabled logs what you are clicking thru to and from.that advertising can be tailored acccordingly I think. That's not virgin tho its the browser I think.

I love how some people try to insist that what I saw wasn't porn sites, when I was the one who saw it, not them.

Believe me, it WAS porn, that I was getting sent adverts for. Links to sexy videos that I would have to pay for - nothing to do with drug taking.

Anyway, Dreamworld may have explained it - thanks.
