To be upset at DH for killing a pheasant?

Driving along a country road we came across a group of pheasants. DH beeped the horn and slowed down a bit but when they didn't move he just kept driving and hit one. His reaction was 'oops'.

Now I know they are probably the UK's most stupid birds but I was shocked he didn't try harder to avoid it, which he could easily have done without putting any human life at risk. He could have slowed down much more than he did and beeped again and they would probably have moved! I was so upset I burst into tears - upset because of the poor little thing (to which he replied 'it's only a bird) but also because of what I thought was a very callous reaction.

AIBU to have got so upset with him?

These things happen unfortunately, pheasants have no road sense and sometimes it can't be avoided, at least not without endangering yourselves or someone else.

But I would not have been impressed by someone who hit it on purpose or could easily have safely avoided it but chose not to. But then cruel/callous attitudes towards animals is one of the few absolute deal-breakers for me in a relationship.

If only you could buy a repellent to keep away the more excitable types

I want that for MN posters :)

No sympathy for pheasants, had one fly straight into my windscreen and shatter it. Fortunately the safety glass held in place and I was able to drive home.
Still cost me £50 excess on my insurance, plus all the hassle of getting it fixed and getting DCs to school etc without my carAngry

If I hit one I take it home to eat, or give it to Mortimer if it's a bit too mashed.

I'm shocked that no one has told you to leave the bastard yet.

Pheasants are indeed the stupidest birds I have ever come across.

They can't fly far, they strut about in the bracken making a loud rasping squawking noise...alerting all the foxes in the neighbourhoods to their whereabouts. They are USELESS....

well almost...............

Doesn't sound as if your husband intentionally killed it. Did you want him to risk your life (or the life of another driver) to avoid killing it?

Are you being unreasonable? Yep....and ridiculous too!
