they haven't had before?

DD in year 3 and has so far had 5 reading books, all of which have been promptly returned to school as she has read them previously -over a year ago!!!

I have spoken directly to the teacher, and sent 2 letters in and tonight yet another book came home that she read at the end of reception ffs

I could quite happily march up to the teacher and throw the bloody book at her in the morning

it's not like she has changed school or anything -surely they should have a record of what books she has read????

I know it is frustrating but I'd speak to the teacher again. In the meantime, just do the book review and read something else from the local library. I have the opposite problem in that I have a dyslexic son who brings home books that are too hard for him as although he can read the individual words, he is unable to read fluently. I think teachers should be aware of the child's capabilities but when there are 30 kids in the class it can't be easy. I get very frustrated with my kids' school and so I have taken some matters into my own hands.

Wooo Blush
Typos / spelling mistakes ... too late.

If she has to write a book review then encourage her to write about how boring the book is and about how unimaginative the descriptions are. I think it's too much to expect her teacher to go through a check list of ALL the books 30 odd children have read over the past year every time some reading material gets sent home.

I was always a very advanced reader. Having to read a few books that were too easy for me or that I'd read before never did me any harm, I learned that sometimes you have to get things done and out of the way and did the things I had to do faster so I could get on with reading animal farm. If she writes the book review talking about how terrible it is she'll probably get extra writing points :D

Moominsarescary · 15/09/2011 23:16

We had a bit of a problem last year ( year 3) ds had read the books before but had just changed school. After a couple of weeks they realised he was more advanced and since then he has been choosing his own books from the school library

Kandinsky · 15/09/2011 23:19

I would suggest you concentrate on your child's comprehension of the book. Ask plenty of questions about what she has read. I have come across many children who can "decode" words beautifully but have absolutely no understanding of what they have read. You are on much stronger ground if you can demonstrate she can read them easily and retell what she has read.

carpwidow · 15/09/2011 23:20

How many days has your child been back at school OP? I am a primary school teacher and my children have only been back 5 days. It is more important that the children and happy, settled and used to my classroom routines. It will take a while before all my 30 children have had a 1:1 session to assess exactly what book is correct for them. Your child has access to lots of books at home - she can extend her book review writing task on the book she currently has. The level of reading book that your child has been given will be adjusted by half term I'm sure. In the meantime, with a mother as dedicated to her education as you are, I'm sure she will come to no harm. Let the teacher use her professional judgement and give her more than a week to do this please.

blackeyedsusan · 15/09/2011 23:27

aahhhh the want to throw the book at the teacher feeling... I recognise it well (i fantasise about flinging it across the classrroom like a frisby... )

(sorry it is late and I have not read all the thread)

do you get the want to march up to the head and tell him to stick the book where the sun don't shine feeling too?

sympathies...

actually we have a new teacher and she is really nice and not read with dd yet so will hold off the head banging until she has been in a few weeks. fortuntely dd likes the books anyway and theyare reaally easy to get done in a couple of minutes before we can get on with the real job of teaching reading with flat stanley et al.

workshy · 15/09/2011 23:30

they went back on the 5th, but it's actually not the level, it's the fact that I am requesting and getting no communication back from the teacher -even if she said, it will probably take 2 weeks, I would be happy because at least I would know I was being listened to

I'm not some horrible pushy mother and I don't go in ranting and demanding meetings the first week back (unlike several of the parents) but I don't want my concerns to be swept aside

my DD tends to do the bare minimum required but if she is interested she puts loads of effort in, I just don't want her to be turned off by school -and that is a genuine concern (and I know she's only 7!)

I agree the lack of communication is not good. However, the home reading book is only a snapshot of what goes on in the classroom - they'll be doing lots of reading right across the curriculum I'm sure and if anything is going to turn her off at 7, it'll be those fecking SATS, not te reading book :)

workshy · 15/09/2011 23:34

she did sats last year and loved them -strange child!

OP posts:
carpwidow · 16/09/2011 19:00

If she loved the SATS I don't think she'll be "turned off" yet! Did you get a new reading book sent home today, or a message?

workshy · 16/09/2011 21:43

managed to catch the teacher this morning
she was suprised we had an ORT book yesterday as she had asked the TA to change it to another level, but she said she would sort her a book out. So we got a library book to read over the weekend and she is going to be reasessed for reading books on monday -she has brought home the lion the witch and the wardrobe -I love that book :-)

carpwidow · 16/09/2011 21:48

Like I said, there's a huge amount to do at this time of year and they will sort it eventually - we're "playing it by ear" a lot with my class and relying on the children to tell us the sort of level they have been used to until we get all the assessments done properly. Hope she enjoys LW&W and make sure she doesn't eat the enchanted Turkish Delight :)

Fairenuff · 16/09/2011 21:49

Thanks for the update Smile. Sounds like 'teething problems' at the start of new year, but hopefully sorted now.

carpwidow · 19/09/2011 19:12

Did they sort re-assess her and sort reading book out? :)
