Went into local store today and saw they are doing 3 for 2 on all baby stuff. They had the usual cheapest item is free disclaimer. Decided to stock up and picked up 3 packs of nappy liners (£ 5.25 a pack), 3 tubs of bottom butter (£ 2.89 a pack) and 3 bags of cotton wool (£ 1.25 a pack). When I went to pay, I discovered that the 3 packs of cotton wool were free, and not one of each of the different items. When I complained that this didn't seem fair and that the Boots 3 for 2 groups like items together making it a better deal for the shopper, the supervisor told me that I'd misinterpreted the deal and would have to make 3 separate transactions and LEAVE THE STORE in between the transactions.

randon post alert .... what is 'bottom butter' ?

pramsgalore · 14/09/2011 18:59

i would have done 3 seperate transactions all lined up on the belt, have done this many a time and never had anything said to me, i once split my tesco shop up as i had money off vouchers for spend x get y off Grin

and boots didn't used to do that, in fact they used to deliberately make me have my cheapest items included in my meal deal for example.

so it's relatively recently that they've started being nice about it.

Iggly · 14/09/2011 18:59

Email waitrose and complain. Theyre usually pretty good at getting back to you.

However you are being a bit U - every 3for2 I've seen is always the cheapest item free no matter what combination. I'm not tight sharp enough to notice how boots do it!

Bottom Butter is a baby product for, well, babies bottoms. It has become v popular in recent years owing to various people hyping it up. It's like putting Vaseline on your face, gloopy & heavy.

But is smells nice.

hocuspontas · 14/09/2011 19:01

I'm surprised Waitrose are still doing it this way. Although I normally check that every 3rd item is free and not the 3 cheapest, the till operators at other retailers say that the till will sort it all out and it does seem to do it correctly! Providing you point it out to Waitrose, why can't they just do a sub-total after each 3 and give you the proper discount that way?

Dp works at HQ and I will get him onto it!

PrimaBallerina · 14/09/2011 19:03

YANBU for being a bit peeved as Boots definitely do it the other way at ALL their stores. Boots appear to have grasped the spirit of a 3 for 2 promotion - i.e. what their customers are likely to expect. Waitrose clearly have not.

Asking you to make three seperate transactions is a bit annoying but asking you to leave the store is down right ridiculous.

complexnumber - I'm sure you didn't mean the use of the word 'niggardly' in a derogatory way but it is commonly used as a racial slur.

Just pointing it out, not wanting to start a bunfight Smile

hocuspontas · 14/09/2011 19:10

DP's just denied all knowledge claiming he's working on John Lewis stuff at the moment and not Waitrose! How unhelpful can you get...

pramsgalore · 14/09/2011 19:10

i can remember when boots 3 for 2 at xmas was not sorted out right by the tills, it was a nightmere as us the customers would be doing several transactions in order to get the right 3rd item free Grin much better when they caught on and got the tills to do it for you, good on boots, but yes waitrose get your act together, yanbu, waitrose is Grin

thisisyesterday · 14/09/2011 19:10

niggardly has nothing to do with the word nigger btw

LaurieFairyCake · 14/09/2011 19:12

They are etymologically related and it is not sensitive. People rarely use it now as it is used as a slur.

pramsgalore · 14/09/2011 19:13

nig·gard·ly
   [nig-erd-lee] Show IPA

adjective

reluctant to give or spend; stingy; miserly.
meanly or ungenerously small or scanty: a niggardly tip to a waiter.

adverb

in the manner of a niggard. Grin
LaurieFairyCake · 14/09/2011 19:13

I meant to say they aren't etymologically related Blush but people don't use it now. It is not politically correct.

hocuspontas · 14/09/2011 19:14

I would say they are not related but are not used because they sound similar.

hocuspontas · 14/09/2011 19:15

lol. A host of crossed posts...

thisisyesterday · 14/09/2011 19:15

I've never ever heard it used in a racial context.

YANBU. I would have been equally peeved.

Faithless12 · 15/09/2011 07:08

Yabu. It said cheapest item free which is what you got.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/09/2011 07:18

It does seem a bit mean... even we, Early Learning Centre give the better deal when people buy books. Before the till did it automatically I used to just manually override it so customers wouldnt lose out.
