I think I'm precious. DH and a few friends want to take DS camping with his friends in a father and son bonding way.

DS is 5.

I'm worried. If it was June I'd say fine but it's nearly October and bloody cold and dark.

Worried they'll get hypothermia, worried DS will hate it (never been before) and scarred for life.

DH doesn't want to look like he's backing out.

They'll be in a nearby field, not up a mountain!

Sounds like fun, they have got proper camping sleeping bags et. Why would DH want to back out. It's not like they're miles away it's in a nearby field.

you are worried about him sleeping in a field with his father? he will love it, hel have so much fun. if he gets cold hel shnuggle daddy.

i cannot wait until our tent is purchased for this very reason.

Make sure he's got lots of layers to wear at night, a hat and thermals and he'll be fine x

Just make sure he has warm clothes, sleeping bag, blankets and a torch. it will be great fun.

He'll love it! We go a lot and our children have always found it to be brilliant. In fact we took DS2 when he was 6 weeks old - first time he actually slept .

We went in February with DS1 when I was pregnant, and it snowed. He had a whale of a time!

He needs lots of warm clothes/thermals, a good sleeping bag and a water bottle with a sports cap for overnight drinkies - and provision for a loo overnight so a torch would be useful. He'll have a fabulous time and the only problem you'll have is he'll want to go again.

YABU, your husband should be just as capable at looking after your child and ensuring he is happy as you are.

Let him go...he'll have a fab time and you'll get some peace and quiet. I took ds (3) camping last month and he loved it (much more than I did). Buy a really good sleeping bag, and let him sleep in joggers and jumper with socks on. If he hates it your dh can always bring home, but I can guarantee he won't!

It is a useful thing for young dcs to learn that nothing dreadful will happen even if they do sometimes end up cold or uncomfortable. Some dcs are very anxious because they have been brought up to believe that their comfort must be attended to at every single moment. Much better to learn that you can forget about your comfort when you are doing something exciting together.

That is an excellent point Cory, although I fear DH might be the one learning it

. . . and socks. Don't forget some nice warm socks for him to sleep in along with everything else.

and don't forget the marshmallows for the hot chocolate! My lot don't even all like marshmallows and/or hot chocolate, but when we go camping we HAVE to have hot chocolate thank you Lord for those little individual sachets in assorted flavours on special offer 5 for a pound... and it HAS to have marshmallows on top... not sure why lol, but it all adds to the fun

Let him do it, he's with his dad, wrap him up warm etc.

DS and DH went camping in August. DS loved it. DH was cold and miserable.

And I second the need for socks. Preferably two pairs.

We are taking DD 5yo camping for Oct half term, will be much colder then but we take loads of bedding and it'll be lovely and cosy.

Took DD in late-Sept when she was 7mths old and DS when he was 10mths - lots of layers and blankets and they were fine. Are now 8 and 5 and LOVE camping.

Primark all-in-one fleecy pyjamas are brill, get a size bigger and you can put them over ordinary pyjamas.

I suggest a nice bar of choc and a good book for you :)
