To wonder what the UN are doing in Basildon?

The traveller who aren't actually travelling and set up an illegal site for ten years, they've exhausted every legal channel and they will be forcible removed on Monday.

They've managed to get the UN involved to protect their human rights. Like what? The UN in Basildon to protect "travellers" who have been told they have to obey the law of the land that applies to all of us.

I can't believe what I'm hearing on R5Live at the moment.

They are looking to see if an injustice being perpetrated. That is their job.

Strikes me that the UN shouldn't be there as the legal process has been followed right through to the high courts. If anything is wrong here it's the time it has taken to evict them, this should never have taken 10 years to come to a head. The legal process has been exhausted.

The UN involved re. planning permission just seems a lot bit OTT to me.

I can't speak for Stranded but the normal was in inverted comma's, Im sure they'll expand. They are claiming they are being discriminated against because they're travellers.

Travellers well travel and they have been in essex for 10 years.

If they were travellers they could travel home to the homes they own in ireland and save the tax payer having to pay to evict them.

I think they are being persecuted.

Don't they own the land, and as for being green belt, wasn't it a scrap yard previously?

We had a similar fight locally - a local scrap dealer (very popular and well used by locals) was refused planning permission and had his licence revoked after many years of successful trading.

The reason?

The land was 'greenbelt'

Funny now the business has gone, the land has been cleared and despite there being a row of houses slap bang in the front of it, along the adjoining road, there is now a development consisting of a hotel and warehousing.

I know anecdotes don't wash very well on the internet, and prove nothing but just saying like....

They are not being persecuted. They had no permission to build their houses on that land. Why should the rules for travellers be any different than for the rest of the residents in the UK who have to pay money if they want to put so much as a small extension on their house?

As many of them seem to have property in Ireland, they can "travel" over there.

is traveller money different from other money then?

and that isn't what i said at all, SB. in fact, if you read my anecdote, you'll see i was meaning exactly the opposite. since they have hounded that bloke off his land, large and visible buildings have gone up

I wonder what the site has done to the value of the properties in the area? Don't those people also have human rights?

the site hasn't done anything to the properties, the negative press has done more harm than anything

Mitmoo if you use google street view you can see many houses, mainly retirement-type bungalows which are almost on top of the site. These houses can not be sold or rented out. Apparently firm offers have been made on many of them for a fraction of their value by members of the Dale Farm community Hmm

Money has a lot to do with it. Buying greenbelt land is cheaper as you cannot build on it. House dwellers who want to build on land they own need to
1 apply for planning permission which cost money
2 comply with building regulations which again costs money

neither of which the travelers seem to think applies to them.

You can actually build on green belt but there are a lot more conditions apply to the planning consent.
