AIBU?

to almost always wash items straight from the shop?

I do not wear items or use items such as bed sheets and throws for instance, straight after buying them. I always put them in a wash first (unless I am super eager to wear something or need the item straight away).

I worked in retail for years, and not only do you not know the condition the items were made in, but they are hardly ever handled well before being displayed on the shop floor.

I remember working for one high street store in particular (a certain lingerie store with a naughty back area and pink shop front, famous for an electrical item named after a carrot munching furry animal), that handled intimate items in rat infested stock rooms (that occasionally flooded through from the roof in my branch) in open cardboard boxes with items spilling out all over the stock room floor. Stock checks were also counted out over old dirty carpeted floors in damp rooms etc, this shop was the worst IME although I do wonder if Primarni could beat them.

There has only ever been one store I have worked in that did not handle merchandise at all like this but the majority do.

So after working in retail, I never wear things without washing first, surely other people must be the same, or am I just being neurotic?

Agree that towels should be washed first as it is meant to improve absorbency.

Clothes I don't bother with, but sometimes think I should - not because of the way staff treat them, but because of all the other customers who might have tried them on in the shop.

I agree with washing towels, they don't seem to dry (bodies, I mean) properly otherwise.

I wash bedding, towels and most of DS's clothes first.

I've never washed my own or DH's before wearing them and can't imagine I ever will.

I wash new items, yes. I don't like the "shop smell" of new clothes.

I wash DD's clothes before first use, as I have noticed that if you spill food on brand new clothes you can never get the stain out.

YANBU I hate the feel of sizing in material and wash it before I make things as well.

I wash everything straight from the shop regardless of whether it's for me or DCs.

not really but recently read that some clothes are 'coated' with something to make them look more appealing in the shop! so probably will now (well some things)

I feel it's a shame to wash before wearing as it's the last time the clothes will look ironed (there's no way it'll get ironed in my houseGrin). DH always washes socks before wearing though.

I never have for myself in the past, but always have for the dcs. Now I wash everything for all of us.

This is because while we were travelling to our holiday destination by ferry this summer when dd's nappy leaked and I had haplessly left her change of clothes in the car, so we had to buy her a, ridiculously expensive, and very naff change of clothes from the shop onboard.

Almost as soon as we put the dress and nappy pants on her she came up with big angry welts all over - basically everywhere the clothes touched. We had to rush her to the onboard medic straight away. As a result, they let dh go back to the car with a member of staff to get the spare outfit I had packed, but forgotten to take upstairs with me in the first place.

Since then, dd has reacted to just having a new top brush against her skin when we were checking it for size before buying and to a new top I was wearing when I picked her up.

Dd is 2 and has never had an allergic reaction of any type before, so it took us completely by surprise.

I dread to think what sort of chemicals are in the fabric to cause that sort of reaction in an otherwise healthy child who has no history of allergies and will be washing all clothes, bedlinen etc before they are used every time in future.

Nope.

I never wash new clothes/linen. I am still alive after all these years.

You are neurotic.

I don't bother with most things, but have to wash jeans or trousers as they give me a rash if I don't. It's probably a mild version of what Moosemama's DD had.

I have heard that a lot of new clothes are treated with formaldehyde during the manufacturing process in order to help keep them wrinkle-free. Since I heard this I now wash everything before wearing/using.

YANBU

I always wash new stuff
skin reactions otherwise

apart from DH who wears stuff straight out the packet
makes me shudder to think about it...

I once went out with a bloke who thought he could set up a business washing and "breaking in" new clothes for people who did not like that new clothes feel. I thought he was a nutter, but reading some of these posts makes me think he might have been onto something

Oh moose I think I have read about that somewhere before. I think the thing I read said that some people once having been overexposed to a chemical and reacting to it, become hypersensitive to much milder chemicals after.

I think it is called multiple chemical sensitivity.

I never have and never will.
Towels are different-you need to wash first.
I agree-neurotic behaviour.

I wash bedlinen and towels before first use otherwise they are starchy and scratchy.

Not clothes though.

I forgot the bedlinen-I find that- like towels-it needs a wash. Clothes don't.

I can't remember ever having washed anything before wearing - unless it was something that was visibly dirty/marked (and in that case I'd only have bought it if it was the only one left - I generally tend to have a rummage on the rail when buying clothes to make sure I get the least creased garment in my size and with no marks).

I only ever washed bedlinen first with one Ex who used to get an allergic reaction new fabrics (he always had to wash all his clothes before wear).

I never washed the DC's stuff first either when they were babies Blush

I am a bit rubbish at laundry and seriously shit at ironing, so nothing I have ever looks as good as the first couple of times it's worn. If I washed it all first I'd never get the enjoyment from a first wear!

Just out of curiousity, to the 'washers' what do you do with clothes that are dry clean only? Do you get them cleaned first before wear?

I tend to wash everything before I wear it. I have sensitive skin and seem to react to some clothes if I don?t, some brands more than others. I have heard that factories treat clothes with chemicals to stop them creasing so badly in shops

I never wash clothes, they look their best before they've been washed.

I tend to order online if possible as they come sealed in a plastic bag and have not been trashed around on a shop floor or tried on.
