I will start by saying I am a reg who has name changed.

I do have a big decision to make, basically when I was pg with my youngest child I started to have dental problems.

Well it got to the stage where once I had my youngest I had 5 teeth removed, and I am left with the rest but 8 are badly damaged.

I am only in my mid 30's I have now to decide whether to have the rest out and have dentures or to carry on having them repaired one by one and run the risk of them getting worse.

I rarely smile anymore because of my teeth and when I do I do it in a way that my teeth don't show.

To some this would seem a no brainer but I feel ridiculous having to decide whether to have dentures or not at my age. Sad

i would find a dentist that specializes in cosmetic dentistry. it is no longer just about teeth bleaching. i would even consider taking out a loan if it is making you that unhappy, either way get a second and even third opinion. i had veneers about 7 years ago and very pleased with them even my dentist could not tell they were veeners until he examined me. yes they did cost a lot. my teeth were not in terrible condition though but i know people who have had teeth implants and are very happy with them but they are not cheap

also do you eat a lot of fruit if you do you need to wash your mouth out after as fruit is full of sugar that can damage your teeth. my friends daughter has just had a few teeth removed, she is very strict with their diet the tooth decay is through eating lots of fruit

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:11

AW, see i think thats funny but then I used to nick my dads teeth and do that to people when I was about 11

SeenButNotHeard · 08/09/2011 23:16

There seem to be lots of people on this thread who first started having dental problems in pregnancy.

I had never even had any fillings until I was pregnant with ds (at age 33) and a wisdom tooth just cracked and needed to be removed. I then needed two further fillings and things have deteriorated since with two more teeth cracking and I am currently in the middle of root canal work.

I had never heard of anyone else experiencing the same sort of problems.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:18

yes I do eat a fair amount of fruit and can't drink milk often as i am sick when i do.

But I do try to drnk plenty of it.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:19

SBNH, nor had I until I went to the dentist during pregnancy and was told it is more common than women realise. As a result many put up with it as they think they are alone.

sunshinelifeisgood · 08/09/2011 23:20

This is one subject that I did not want to go down but I am going to, as in a previous post a while back I told mumsnet that I was born with a hare lip and clefte palate. I grew up with a very few teeth in my mouth due to hare lip blah blah. If you find yourself a good, and i MEAN GOOD dentist they can sort out any issues that you have. I now consider myself to have some very nice teeth in my mouth. Will admit that they are obviously not all my own but will also say (and hopefully mumsnet will back me up), it does not notice.
To me personally a nice smile makes your face. Who gives a flying fish if they are real or not. I dont mean to sound vain cos that is one thing I am not but I wil say if your teeth are making you miserable then please please go for what your dentist is offering x

nickschick · 08/09/2011 23:22

Can I tell you something very quickly?

I was 28 and petrified of the dentist I simply didnt go for 15 years,as a child I had a shit diet and never went to the dentist unless it was an emergency.

Anyway my friend had her crowns redone and they looked fab,my teeth in the meantime were killing me Sad I was in agony with them.

Go to my dentist she said he's lovely - so I did.

For 9 months I went to the dentist every 2 weeks and now I go religiously my dentist is fab ive had 2 teeth out loads of fillings etc etc and im not even scared - hes really wonderful.

Dont be scared of the dentist its not as bad as you fear and if your teeth feel and look good so will you.

Everyone comments on my smile Grin and cant believe that my teeth were in such a bad way.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:23

SSLIG, my sister has a congenital illness and grew up with few teeth of her own. She has had dentures since a child she keeps telling me just to get it done as bad teeth seem to run in the family.

FabbyChic · 08/09/2011 23:23

Dentures are so well made now that the fit like a glove. You cannot tell the difference between dentures and the real thing now to look at, and you can eat what you like.

In your shoes I'd go with dentures, they should fit them immediately after yours are removed they have to for the fit over the gumline.

Why not discuss your options with your dentist? You want immediate dentures nothing else so you will never be without teeth. Good luck.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:27

Fabby,

I was sat in my local the othr week talking to my friens there about dentists. I said to one lady I wish I had lovely teeth like you and she started laughing she doesn't have 1tooth which is her own!!

sunshinelifeisgood · 08/09/2011 23:28

Thelady I do not have a congential illness I have a hare lip and cleft palate is not a ongoing illness x and by the way I am of course stunningly gorgeous so I have been told :).. great thanks to all that brought me back up a few weeks ago.. x

Toyoung please please take advice you will feel so much better, so what if you have crowns/false teeth x

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:29

SSLIG, I understand that. I was saying my sister also has dentures and has done for years yet copes just as well as you do. Sorry you misunderstood.

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:30

SSLIG - I am the OP - I am tooyoung x

FabbyChic · 08/09/2011 23:30

Wow evenstar just goes to show.

My mum had false teeth at 24, they were really badly made, she is now early seventies though!

nickschick · 08/09/2011 23:31

Sunshine is very attractive I will vouch for that Smile actually Grin

shakey1500 · 08/09/2011 23:33

fabby I think that a temprary denture is made until the gums have "grown over" the hole left from removing teeth/crowns.

I've been advised I will have a temp denture for 3 months until the gums settle, then another..shit..can't think of the correct terminology...cast (?) is made etc

shakey1500 · 08/09/2011 23:33

Impression- that's it!

sunshinelifeisgood · 08/09/2011 23:36

ok lady I did not know you were the OP,all i can say is that hand on heart no one has ever noticed that my teeth are not my own. Unless I take them out in front of people (which might be a turn off lol). I truly hope that no one knows me in real life here and must admit I think I shall delete my picture just in case. Teeth/hygiene are a big issue I think. I shall thank my ever forceful mother and a fecking great dentist/surgeon the rest of my life

TheLadyEvenstar · 08/09/2011 23:41

I will look for a new dentist tomorrw and see them to talk to before I do anything.

Thankyou all so very much.

sunshinelifeisgood · 08/09/2011 23:44

The lady. Not sure where you live but if you are near Herts please contact Mount Vernon Hospital I think they do NHS or if you can afford it go private with them.. I seriously wish you all the very best. take care x
OI NICKSCHIK i lub you :)

SpeedyGonzalez · 08/09/2011 23:52

No advice, just sympathy. And Angry that having babies screws up so many women's bodies.

cantstandthenoise · 09/09/2011 00:32

I also have had a lot of dental problems caused by me grinding my teeth in my sleep. I also smoke but I had problems even when I was a child. I have had lots of root canal fillings etc. On my left side I had three teeth at the furthest back removed and one on my right.

Last year I decided to have an implant on the left which I am delighted with, the dentist could only put one there so there is still a gap but less noticable and I am saving up for the one on the right. I also have a gum shield to wear at night.

I would definately recommend implants if you can afford them but they are very expensive.

youarekidding · 09/09/2011 07:05

sunshine You are stunning. Grin You look so happy and relaxed having your photo taken - something I aspire too. Sad

Thumbwitch · 09/09/2011 07:15

Hi TLES - sorry to hear of the troubles you're having with your teeth! My Nan had all hers out at 42 and wore dentures from then on; my Grandad hung onto his into his 90s and ended up with about 6 teeth at the front and possibly 4 at the back - not many, but just enough to get by on!

No advice, sorry, just sympathy. I hate my teeth but would prefer to hang onto them, despite their shocking propenisty to develop holes - but sometimes I do think it would be just easier to get dentures. Mind you, they're bloody expensive as well!! And the earlier you get them, the more sets you'll need to get, cos your gums shrink as you get older. :(

quirrelquarrel · 09/09/2011 11:46

Roald Dahl had all his teeth out at about 20 and wore dentures for the rest of his life and persuaded about half his family to do the same. It was quite a craze back then.
