in thinking that 'I went without when I was little' is a shiteola argument

I?m sorry, I know there is another double buggy thread but this has pissed me off so much I need to rant. It?s not really about buggies anyway, just someone fucking pissing me off, this is just the latest thing!!

Ok, so a relative of mine, let?s call her X, has a slight issue with double buggies. I made the mistake of asking her if she?d got one and if she had any recommendations when I was expecting DD, and that opened the floodgates. Double buggies make children lazy, toddlers should be ?made? to walk (how exactly?) etc. You get my drift. Bear in mind that she actually has a car and her DS?s get driven everywhere?.! Anyway, for some reason this has reared its head again. I got a bit cross with her, pointing out, AGAIN, that DS at 2.5 simply cannot walk all the way to the shops, round the shops and home again if he is tired or hasn?t slept well/feeling ill etc. He is getting better, but there are still places that we enjoy going to that aren?t accessible by bus and would simply be impossible for us to visit without a double buggy as I?d never get him home again afterwards! Her argument against this: her mum didn?t have a double buggy in the 70?s and she walked everywhere when she was 2.

Well; AIBU in thinking this is a shite argument? I?ll bet if a double buggy had been available her mum would have snapped it up. Basically what?s she saying is that my DS should be made to walk everywhere in the pissing rain all through winter because she had to when she was little, while her DS?s are nice and snug in their car. Surely as an intelligent woman she must be able to see that this is a massive double standard. And arguing that we didn?t always have double buggies? Well, we didn?t always have washing machines either. Or central heating. Or electric ovens. Shall we just get rid of all mod cons because we didn?t always have them??

Ooooh, she makes me Angry

crap argument and pisses me off because my mum uses is all the time.

As for 2.5 y/o walking to arounf and back from the shops - don;t even attempt it! I did once and regretted it immensely

Exactly madamdeathstare - if we had a doctor's appt and needed to be there on time, I could either a) leave an hour to do a 15 minute walk (possibly in pissing rain, again) or b) put toddler in buggy and arrive in 15mins.

People forget what looking after small children can actually involve.

My mother has been saying I should get rid of the pushchair since the boys were one and walk the mile into town. Stupid? Yeah, but it gets worse.

I live on the same hill, along the same road, that she did when I was a toddler. And she kept me in the pushchair to make the same journey until I was 3!

But no, I should keep one-year-old twins out of the road while carrying the shopping!

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 06/09/2011 14:40

You just need to nice and calmly SCREAM into her face "your dc walks nowhere as you have a CAR you lazy bitch!"

Chandon · 06/09/2011 14:51

I never had a double buggy, I just plonked my toddler on top of the hood (sturdy Graco model!), or the baby on his lap, when he was too tired to walk.

He did get used to walking long distances, as indeed many toddlers could if they were used to it.

I can actually see your SIL's point of view, I do see a lot of kids in double buggies who are lazy rather than tired, I bet.

Anyhow, don't get cross about it, everyone's life is different and everyone has different needs and wants.

YANBU. "Her argument against this: her mum didn?t have a double buggy in the 70?s and she walked everywhere when she was 2." Yeah, the 1970s are just SO comparable with the 2010s! (Warning - old git alert!)

In the 70s groceries were bought near-daily from local shops, because the nearest you got to a supermarket was a Co-Op, which were also pretty local anyway. Milk was delivered, so was meat IIRC.

I walked everywhere when I was 2, too. But 'everywhere' was normally only a couple of hundred yards, and that includes all the shops, the library, play area and my Gran's house. Oh, and there was a lot less road traffic as well, so mum's didn't worry so much about their children being run over, so didn't have the added incentive to strap us in a buggy at all.

Your relative is being stupid.
